Motorcycle sales on the rise as mid-year figures emerge

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has announced a promising half-year figure of motorcycle sales, with 53,594 units sold from the January to June 2013 period, a 2.4 percent increase on the same period in 2012.

The cumulative figure is made up of road, off-road and scooter and ATV sales. Both road and off-road sales saw marked rises, while the scooter and ATV segments produced a noticeable decline.

Road motorcycle sales were up 4.4 percent on the same period, with 21,169 new bikes sold across Australia.

Honda led the market sales race for the six-month period, selling 4,177 new road-going models. Harley-Davidson was a close second with 3,893 sales, and Kawasaki third with 3,694.

The standout road bike model was Kawasaki’s Ninja 300, which saw 1,898 sales, over 1000 clear of its closest-performing rival.

Honda fills positions two through five on the sales charts – CT110X (790), CBR250R (714), CB125E (678) and CBR500R (564).

Yamaha’s XVS650 and YZF-R15 were both in the top ten, along with an additional entry from Kawasaki – the Ninja 650RL – plus two Harley-Davidsons.

In the specific Super Sport category, Honda’s CBR500R and CBR1000RR made up for a large portion of the units moved.

Honda’s strong sales performance was reflected across total sector tallies, with the Japanese marque moving 12,243 units, more than 3000 clear of Yamaha (9,017). Kawasaki sold a total of 5,809 bikes in the same period, with Suzuki selling 5,578.
