We catch up with a young rider on the rise in Australia.

A new generation of road racing talent is filtering through the top ranks of our domestic championships.

Queenslander Callum Spriggs is a name of note, and a rider that is quickly coming to the fore as his experience level grows.

The quietly-spoken rider from Caboolture rode his first bike at six, starting as most do on a 50cc. He began racing a few years later on a 65cc bike and spent close to a decade pursuing a passion for competing on dirt before being lured to road racing.

“One of my dad’s mates was into the road racing, and kept encouraging us to give it a go,” explained Spriggs. “As soon as I did I realised I really liked it. I went pretty well, and from there I haven’t looked back.”

Spriggs’ transition between the disciplines was only relatively recent. His first race on a road bike, no less than a Yamaha R6, was at Morgan Park at Warwick, mid-way through 2011.

His introduction to the sport came around the same time that friend and now teammate Aiden Wagner made the switch. The riders are now effectively teammates, with their rapid progression assisted by the father of fellow Queenslander, Mike Jones.

“When Mike went overseas his Dad helped me and Aiden out,” said Spriggs. “He’s been helping us this year and a bit of last year too. It’s been good to have that kind of advice and direction.”

Spriggs contests both FX-Superbike (FX-600) and (Supersport) Australian Superbike Championships, and is quickly making a name for himself as a capable 600cc rider.

For his relative level of experience, Spriggs is holding his own both series.

He is a regular top five runner in the Supersport field, and has two third-place race finishes to his credit already. After four rounds of competition, he finds himself on equal points with teammate Wagner.

He identifies his Superpole win at Sydney Motorsport Park as a breakthrough moment, and hopes to be able to build on that form as the year continues.

“I was really happy to get the Superpole win there. The whole Sydney weekend was really good, it gave me a lot more confidence when it came to racing.”

The diversity of the competition in the opposing FX-600 class is only helping Spriggs hone his racecraft.

“It’s a real Yamaha battle in there, it’s always tough to beat the YRT guys like Cru Halliday and Rick Olson but behind them it’s pretty close as well.”

Spriggs has three second-place finishes and a single third to his credit, and currently sits fourth in the class. And like the Supersport category, he finds himself level-pegged with Wagner, with the pair separated by just one point.

For the immediate future, his goals are centred around achieving as much success as he can on a local level, and continuing to race against the best competition in order to further his experience.

Spriggs identifies riders the likes of Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi as ones he looks up to most, and a longer term goal of his is to pursue a ride on the international stage and go as far as that can take him.

Keep an eye out, this is a rider that will certainly be winning races in the very near future!
