Fan Guide: 2014 ASC Rd2 Mallala

National superbike competition returns to South Australia.

The Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship will enter Mallala in South Australia this weekend, 16-18 May, marking the first time national level road racing has been contested at the venue since 2009.

The Swann Series has become the premier series in Australia for 2014, with Team Honda Racing’s Jamie Stauffer scoring victory at the season-opening round at Wakefield Park in March. The two-time Australian Superbike Champion topped teammate Wayne Maxwell and Next Gen Motorsports BMW’s Glenn Allerton.

Both Maxwell and Allerton will be fighting for full fitness this weekend however, with Maxwell sustaining leg and wrist injuries in the Endurance World Championship round at Bol d’Or, while Allerton is recovering from required mid-season knee surgery.

Mallala will mark the comeback of Team Honda Racing’s Josh Hook to the fray, while his substitute at Wakefield Park Troy Herfoss has also been named within the factory squad for the season remainder.

One notable absentee this weekend is multi-time Australian champion Kevin Curtain, who announced his shock retirement directly following the opening round following a decorated career that stretched well into his 40s.

While Curtain’s departed, Robbie Bugden, Rick Olson and Cru Halliday will fly the factory Yamaha flag, coming off a successful private test at the venue last month.

And with the factory riders primed to shine, a selection of quality privateers will also be certain to contend for victory, including highly-capable Kawasaki trio Sean Condon, Matt Walters and rookie ‘Mad’ Mike Jones.

Alongside the Superbikes throughout the weekend will be Supersport, Formula Oz, FX Pro-Twins and the popular new FX300 Ninja Cup. All action will be streamed Sunday on CycleOnline.com.au.
