Newly-crowned two-time Australian Supersport Champion Daniel Falzon’s Jon Daniels Racing team has sensationally quit the Australasian Superbike Championship (ASC) with three rounds still remaining in the season.

Falzon is currently second in the Supersport category of the Swann Series at the halfway point after sweeping the recent Queensland Raceway round, but has now exited the series just days after clinching a second ASBK Supersport championship on Sunday.

With the 2012 ASBK Superstock title, as well as the 2013 and 2014 Supersport crowns to his credit, Falzon’s exit is a bitter blow for the thriving ASC Supersport series – citing the decision as a financial one considering the unique structure of the series.

Instead, Falzon will focus on the final round of the Phillip Island Championship, which will be hosted alongside the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix in October. The team also has its sights set on what Motorcycling Australia (MA) is planning to deliver in 2015.

“It was exciting to hear what MA has planned for next year’s series and the buzz in the pits was encouraging,” a statement from the family-owned team read. “As a team we are constantly making decisions about the best path for Daniel to travel. Any serious racer knows there are many options and funds need to be spent wisely.

“As 2014 ASBK champion, current leader in the Phillip Island Championship and running a close second in the ASC series, we feel that we may be able to take a little time to consider other options.

“Conscious of the effort required by the team and the funds needed, we have decided to withdraw from the ASC series, as for our team it does not quite offer a format or utilise tracks which we feel are beneficial to Daniel or value for our racing dollars. Our commitment at the start of the year was to commence all three series – we have fulfilled this.”

Following the Queensland Raceway round of the series, Falzon currently sits five points behind arch-rival Aaron Morris – the team’s decision vanishing any impending on-track fireworks to finish out the ASC season between the pair.
