Team Motul Honda’s Wayne Maxwell is recuperating after undergoing surgery on his freshly broken collarbone on Tuesday, positive he will be competitive when the Australasian Superbike Championship resumes at Wakefield Park on 12-14 September.

Maxwell had a plate and eight screws inserted into his right collarbone yesterday afternoon after crashing his dirt bike at Frankston late last week, now facing a race to fitness in the lead-up to round five in Goulburn.

“The surgery was a success and it all feels okay,” Maxwell told CycleOnline.com.au this afternoon. “I got a plate and eight screws in my shoulder, but it’s feeling better than what it was before I went in.

“It’s just a matter of resting for a week, then we can hopefully start to do a bit of training and get ready Wakefield Park. The bike drove me into the ground on the right-hand side, so I’m just really lucky that it’s only a collarbone and everything else is okay.”

Last year’s Australian Superbike Champion Maxwell currently holds down a 14-point lead in the ASC series over injured teammate Jamie Stauffer, with Wakefield Park local favourite Troy Herfoss an additional 24 points back with two rounds remaining.

“I haven’t thought too much about it yet,” he added. “It’s not really going to affect me too much because I’ve ridden all year injured. It’s going to be difficult to win, but also difficult to stay out of trouble – I don’t want to get caught up with other people like what happened in Queensland.”
