Motorcycling Australia (MA) has confirmed that Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) regulars will be permitted to contest the opening round of the 2015 Superbike World Championship in a wildcard role.

Domestic racers from the Superbike and Supersport categories will be eligible for double duties in the ASBK/WSBK double-header, MA has clarified with the FIM.

“MA have communicated with the FIM and received the following statement from the FIM Racing Commission,” a statement read. “According to the current SBK/SSP/SST1000 FIM Regulations, they cannot forbid a rider to participate in the WSBK round as wild card and in a support race. Therefore riders are permitted to enter both WSBK and ASBK at the same meeting.

MA technical officer and member of the ASBK Management Team, Peter Doyle, sees the conclusion as a positive for riders intending to compete on both the local and international stages.

“This confirmation from the FIM is fantastic news for ASBK competitors,” Doyle said. “Being able to compete with world class riders at a one-off round and not miss the opening ASBK round means we’ll have a level playing field come round two at Morgan Park Raceway.”

The Phillip Island ASBK and WSBK opening rounds will take place at the picturesque Victorian venue on 19-22 February.
