Bike: 2016 Husqvarna FS 450

New-generation Husqvarna supermoto bike breaks cover.

Husqvarna Motorcycles has introduced the newly-released 2016 model FS 450. This completely revamped supermoto bike has features that represent the most advanced Husqvarna technologies. The FS 450 is a machine in the real Swedish tradition and the distinctive and futuristic bodywork highlights a massive leap forward in performance.

The company’s research and development engineers have designed a new chromium molybdenum steel frame that redefines the bike’s structural aspect and is in complete harmony with the new engine stays. The result is improved handling precision, while at the same time delivering an excellent feeling to the rider.

This new design, high quality materials and high-tech production processes by WP Performance Systems result in a weight saving of 380g when compared to the 2015 FS 450.

At the same time the new sub-frame is made of a composite material that is 30 percent carbon fibre and features a three-piece construction, which is one kilogram lighter than its equivalent in the previous model. Weighing only 1.4kg, it is shorter and more compact for greatly improved ergonomics.

The new cast aluminium swingarm has been redesigned for optimal stiffness to improve traction and feeling. It is also 250g lighter while maintaining its structural integrity and reliability.

The 63 horsepower single-overhead-cam 450cc engine, the most powerful Husqvarna 450cc supermoto engine yet developed, is smaller, lighter and reconfigured for optimal mass-centralisation within the new chromoly steel frame. In short, it represents the perfect complement to the new generation chassis.

The new engine is now 23mm shorter, 23mm narrower and 9mm lower. Every internal component has been revised and repositioned to reduce the weight by 1.8 kg for an overall weight of 27.8kg.

The SOHC cylinder head has also been redesigned to be 350g lighter and features optimised combustion chamber and ports. The crankshaft has 10 percent more inertia and has been repositioned 9mm backwards and 7mm higher. The new crankcases are now significantly more compact and lighter.

The FS 450 has a lighter and more compact five-speed gearbox that is 8mm narrower and 350g lighter than the previous generation. The APTC (Adler Power Torque Clutch) slipper clutch prevents rear wheel instability and hopping when braking hard going into the apex of a turn. The Magura hydraulic system guarantees perfect clutch modulation.

Meanwhile the new Keihin Engine Management System (EMS) is smaller, lighter and faster at processing data for more efficient engine management. The FS 450 also features a standard handlebar map switch, which also activates launch control, a function that limits the amount of power to the rear wheel for approximately two seconds.

The repositioning of the injector on the new 44mm throttle body optimises flow into the combustion chamber. The overall weight is reduced by 100g through eliminating the throttle linkage and directly mounting the throttle cables. At the same time, the throttle body provides more immediate throttle response and feeling.

The exhaust system is redesigned to improve mass-centralisation and reduce noise. The resonance chamber on the 450cc SOHC engine is also integrated into the header pipe to resemble a two-stroke expansion chamber. The silencer is also shorter than on the MY15 FS 450.

The FS 450 is equipped with superior Brembo brakes, featuring a four-piston radially mounted caliper and pump combined with a 310mm front disk. A single piston caliper and a 220mm disc are fitted to the rear.

Lightweight and strong black 16.5-inch/17-inch Alpina spoke wheels are fitted both front and rear together with Bridgestone 125/80 R420 and 165/65 R420 slick tyres for maximum grip, traction and agility.

Thanks to the accurate and consistent damping characteristics of the closed cartridge technology and 280 mm suspension travel, the quality WP Suspension comprising a 48mm closed cartridge front fork and CNC machined black triple clamps, ensure exceptional handling and feel of the front end.

The precisely engineered flex is designed to deliver comprehensive feedback and evenly distribute the clamping force on the fork leg to maximise the contact area for optimal sensitivity and minimum friction.

The high performance WP rear shock has been specifically designed for supermoto and features 266mm or rear travel. It features fully adjustable rebound and high/low speed compression, guaranteeing excellent stability and world-class damping.

The airbox is also redesigned and comes with a new inlet duct that reduces deformation, ensuring maximum airflow and filter protection. The air filter can be accessed without tools by simply removing the left side panel.

The new FS 450 Supermoto, which is presented in striking new graphics, is now set to deliver a thrilling, intuitive and confidence-inspiring riding experience. Stay tuned to www.husqvarna-motorcycles.com/en_au for further details.
