Podium delight for Dunlop at Morgan Park ASBK round

Dunlop Tyres press release:

Dunlop’s Australian Superbike Championship racers have stood across multiple class podiums at Morgan Park’s fifth round of the 2016 season in Queensland over the weekend. The result sees Wayne Maxwell lead the championship into the title-decider.

Yamaha Racing Team’s Maxwell qualified and finished both 19-lap races in second position, taking the runner-up result overall at the penultimate stop of the season to carry a seven-point advantage into Winton’s final round at the end of next month.

Maxwell was joined by YRT teammate Glenn Allerton on the overall podium after he recovered from a seventh-place qualifying position to score 4-4 results on race day. That placed him third overall and he’s in that same position in the standings, 11 points from Maxwell.

Leading privateer Daniel Falzon impressed with third position in the opening Superbike encounter for JD Racing Yamaha, backing that up with a fighting fifth in race two and securing fourth overall. Third of the official Yamahas, Cru Halliday, was third in race two.

The Supersport category was topped by Dunlop-equipped Luke Mitchell to keep his title hopes alive with one round remaining. Yamaha-mounted Mitchell took pole position with a new best lap and stormed to the first race win in a breakthrough performance. He later clinched the round via a fourth in race two. Also on the podium in third following race one was Yamaha rider Chris Quinn.

A talented Moto3 podium was topped by teenage revelation Tommy Edwards, winning all three races across the Morgan Park weekend and joined on the overall rostrum by fellow Dunlop racers Tayla Relph and Locky Taylor.

“We knew this was going to be a tough weekend for us, but at the end of it all we walked away with positive results,” reflected Dunlop national motorcycle manager Sabastian Mincone. “My congratulations to Luke Mitchell, who was fast all weekend in the Supersport class with a pole position and a win in race one, and also to Chris Quinn, who came in third in race one.

“In the Superbike class we had strong results and Wayne is still leading the series, so this will make for an exciting final round at Winton in October. Also congratulations to Tommy Edwards who lead the charge in the Moto3 class with a Dunlop podium whitewash.”

The sixth and penultimate round of the 2016 Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) series will be contested at Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria on 30 September-1 October.
