Bike: 2017 KTM 1290 Super Duke R

KTM makes key styling and technical changes to its rip-snorting nakedbike.

For 2017, the KTM 1290 Super Duke R has received a raft of changes that have modified the bike’s appearance, engine and handling performance all for the better. Most noticeably different is the styling with the SDR now carrying a LED headlight built on an aluminium structure. Form meets function here, as it also carries the control unit circuit boards and serves as a heat sink flanked by LED daytime running lights.

The 1301cc power train now runs smoother, consumes less fuel and cuts down on CO2 emissions by about 10 percent. Even so, the engine delivers a whopping 132kW. Titanium inlet valves and new combustion chambers make for an increased compression ratio, while shortened intake funnels and an exhaust flap with a smart actuator system result in the smoothest, widest powerband ever on the Super Duke R.

New resonator chambers on the cylinder heads serve to further increase engine running below 5000rpm while cutting CO2 emissions. Looking at the chassis, the torsionally rigid WP split forks with separate damping circuits receive stiffer springs and a sportier setup. At the rear, the WP shock absorber also gets a stiffer fork spring and a setup set for high speed excellence.

The latest Metzeler Sportec M7 RR supersport rubber is fitted as OEM. From the rider’s seat, the cutting-edge TFT dashboard instrument and illuminated menu switch on the handlebar are among the most distinctive innovations while the addition of new electronic systems include a cruise control. Also, the new 1290 Super Duke R is now activated via the key transponder of the new KTM RACE ON system, which also includes the filler cap release.

As an option, buyers can specify the Performance Pack. Besides the Motor Slip Regulation (MSR), it includes the quickshifter+ for lightning fast up and down shifting without using the clutch and avoiding nasty load reversal within the drive train. The final ingredient is the KTM MY RIDE for wireless, flawless smartphone integration.

Also new and optional, the Track Pack takes care of a scorching take-off via launch control. It also includes the new MTC slip adjust, which is adjustable in nine stages. The freely configurable engine maps of the integrated ‘Track’ ride mode include an additional, even more aggressive mapping, and the anti-wheelie mode may be disengaged.

The 2017 1290 Super Duke R is expected by mid-2017 with final specifications, colours and pricing being confirmed closer to then. See www.ktm.com.au for all the latest information.
