MotoGP: Lorenzo again quickest in post-race test at Brno

Fiat Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo set the fastest lap of the weekend during Monday's post-race test.

Fiat Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo set the fastest lap of the weekend during Monday's post-race test.

Fiat Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo picked up from where he left off on Sunday at the Brno round of the MotoGP World Championship, the race winner once again topping the time sheets at the post-race test on Monday.

In a test cut short by rain in the afternoon, Lorenzo was nearly half a second ahead of Australian Casey Stoner. The championship leader tried a new engine upgrade and a new suspension setting for his M1 and also completed some laps on Yamaha’s 2011 prototype YZR-M1.

“This was an important and interesting test for us, both for the rest of the season and looking towards next year,” the Spaniard said. “We had a lot to do but unfortunately the rain forced us to stop early.

“As well as the ‘new’ prototype machine for next year we also tried an engine upgrade and a new Ohlins suspension, but it’s too early to know if they will be better for our M1, which is already very competitive. We got quite a lot of information though so hopefully it will help the engineers to improve things even more.”

Stoner clocked the second fastest time as he tested a new fork, however the rain restricted he and the Ducati Team in moving forward during the test.

“We tried a new fork today and as far as we could tell the feeling is positive,” he said. “Unfortunately we were only able to get a couple of hours in this morning because immediately after lunch it started to rain and we couldn’t complete the test.

“I hung about in the garage in case we got chance to go back out but the track stayed wet and there was no point. Our impressions of the fork are good but really the day was a bit of a waste.”

Fresh from his second place finish in yesterday’s race, Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa spent time improving his race set-up before trialing his RC212V with a modified chassis, setting the third fastest lap of the test.

Just before lunchtime he had a low-speed fall in turn seven, but he was able to return to the track to continue testing in the afternoon. The rain however prevented Pedrosa from trying the new Ohlins equipment.

After struggling in Sunday’s race, Lorenzo’s teammate Valentino Rossi and his crew were keen to understand what had happened so they worked closely on their setting to do just that, with the Italian completing more laps than nearly anyone else.

Rossi also had the chance to try the new 2010 engine upgrade and finished the day fourth fastest.

Rounding out the top five was a much improved Colin Edwards for Monster Tech 3 Yamaha, while his teammate Ben Spies completed 36 of his 42 laps onboard a 2011 prototype model of Yamaha’s factory YZR-M1 machine.

Spies was delighted with the potential of the test bike and finished in sixth position on the timesheets having been able to give valuable feedback to engineers. Spies is all but confirmed to be replacing Valentino Rossi at Fiat Yamaha in 2011.

“It was a good day. I can’t say too much about the new bike and honestly I’m not sure exactly what I rode,” he explained. “I just got on and rode what was given to me and I didn’t set any blistering lap times today but that was not the objective.

“Today was all about giving feedback and getting some data on the new bike. The good thing is that I was pretty much on the pace of the bike I’ve been riding since February and that is a big positive because we’ve got plenty of time to work on that bike. We got lots of information so it was a productive day.”

Japanese 250GP World Champion Hiroshi Aoyama made his return from a back injury to lap 14th fastest, while LCR Honda’s Randy de Puniet sat out the test due to his leg injury sustained at the Sachsenring.

Suzuki had three riders out on track today, with Alstare World Superbike rider Sylvain Guintoli joining regulars Loris Capirossi and Alvaro Bautista to assess the latest version of the 2011 GSV-R.
