Speedway: Darcy Ward wins second straight junior world title

Not content with being a one-time world champion, Darcy Ward has joined the motorcycle racing elite, winning his second consecutive Junior World Speedway Championship in the Czech Republic.

Coming off his world championship success in 2009, Ward produced a brilliant performance on the biggest stage, claiming title number two in a three-way race-off.

Finishing level on points at the completion of the 20 runs with Poland’s Maciej Janowski and Latvian Maksim Bogdanov, Ward produced a flawless race to win the race-off and another world championship crown.

Already an Australian Under-21 representative, 2010 has been another year of improvement for Ward on the back of a 2009 that saw him add an Australian Junior Speedway Championship to his world crown.

The 18-year-old has spent the last two years racing in Europe, and is currently competing in the British Elite League (BEL) for the Poole Pirates.

Janowski will get his chance at revenge when Poole meet Coventry in their second leg BEL play-off, with the Polish star keen to get one over a confident Ward on Tuesday morning Australian time.

The young Aussie need not look far for some home-grown support Ward, with fellow Australians Chris Holder, Jason Doyle and David Watt maintaining a strong ex-pat presence.
