Carr scores FX-Superbike victory for BMW at Wakefield Park

Privateer Carr Bros. Motorsport City Coast BMW rider Brayden Carr has taken victory at Wakefield Park’s second round of the 2011 YMF Loan Yamaha Australian Superbike Championship on Sunday.

The New South Welshman scored second in all three 10-lap races to clinch the overall from defending champion Kevin Curtain, the Yamaha Racing Team factory rider’s perfect record over the weekend dashed by a five in the third and final race of the weekend.

Curtain suffered from a tyre temperature problem in the final outing of the weekend, his result tying him with Carr on 66 points for the round, but missing out on the countback.

An additional bonus for Carr for the weekend was a new lap record of 59.576, set in race one on lap three to better Curtain’s previous benchmark of 59.839 set in 2010.

Rounding out the overall podium was Jason Cullen (National Bio Diesel Honda), whose highlight was a stunning final race victory by less than a second over Carr and brother/teammate Glenn Cullen.

The latter Cullen brother was credited fourth overall for the round, while Curtain’s YRT teammate Pat Medcalf scored fifth. Third YRT contender Rick Olson was 10th overall after crashing out of race one.

In the FX600 ranks it was Curtain who proved victorious with three wins over rising star Josh Hook (Honda) and Jackson Leigh-Smith (Honda).

Local hot shot Michael Lockart was also a contender until he crashed heavily in race two, sustaining a shoulder injury in the incident and causing the race to be red flagged.

The ever popular Formula Oz category was clinched by veteran Richard Zaja (Honda), while multi-time national Supermoto champion Angus Reekie (KTM) was second and Tony Mihaljevic third.

Other round winners for the weekend included Craig Goldsmith (FX400), Nicky Diles (FX125 Pro), Ryan Kuffer (FX125 Sports) and Tony Sims (250 Mono).

The series will continue at Eastern Creek Raceway in New South Wales on 1-3 July.
