Australian Superstock 600 Championship leader ‘Mad’ Mike Jones made his debut in the 2011 PETRONAS Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) at Malaysia’s Sepang Circuit last weekend, finishing with 4-6 results.
Contested on the North Circuit at the popular grand prix complex, 17-year-old Jones was impressive in his first international endevour after qualifying in fourth position.
The weekend was won by former World Superbike and Supersport Championship regular Katsuaki Fujiwara (Kawasaki), dominating qualifying and both races across the weekend.
Riding for the ‘PETRONAS SYNTIUM MOTO Yamaha Raceline’ team, race one saw Jones finish 14.070 seconds in arrears of Fujiwara after 20 laps, before he was 15.045 off the Japanese star in leg two.
The result sees Jones ranked third in the title standings following one of six rounds.
Another Aussie in the field was ASBK Supersport regular Chris Quinn, who finished with 8-13 results for the weekend.
Since retiring from full time competition in the world championship ranks at the end of 2010, official Kawasaki test rider Fujiwara will contest the entire ARRC series this season.
