Aussie Superstock 1000 FIM Cup rider Bryan Staring is recovering at home in rural Italy after a escaping serious injury in a high speed crash at the famous Monza circuit in the early stages of the WSSTK 1000 race on the weekend.
Staring, who qualified a fantastic fifth place for the race, was running in the top eight when on lap four the Kawasaki star suffered from a huge highside at Lesmo Two.
Bryan was running in sixth place at the time of the accident. Staring was flung from the bike while entering the turn, however, the cause of the accident is yet to be determined as either rider error or engine/gearbox failure.
“Fortunately I have only come away with bad bruising and I have five weeks to train and prepare for round three at Misano on June 12,” Staring said. “It was a strange crash. I was not doing anything differently to any other lap and suddenly I was flicked off the bike with a closed throttle.
“I thought I had been hit from behind. The team is yet to pull the engine down and check to see if the engine locked up, however, the bike has been extremely reliable in the past. We learned a lot over the weekend and I know I had the pace to win that race.
“I’m not so happy to lose the opportunity of those points, or any points, however, there were some positives over the weekend and the season is young.
“I’ve been to Misano so I am looking forward to a great result there. In the meantime I will be training hard and hopefully we can do some pre-round testing on the ZX-10R”.
Staring is now back in 11th position in the World FIM Cup SSTK 1000 Championship on his team Pedercini ZX-10R after going into the round in fifth place.
“Championships are long and although we need all possible points, there usually has to be at least one DNF and this could be it,” he added. “In a way I’m fortunate to have avoided the huge crash at Ascari where a leading bike blew up.
“I was in that pack of riders and would have been tangled up in that enormous crash. Prior to the accident, I really enjoyed the atmosphere at Monza and the history of the track. It was an awesome experience and I’m looking forward to many more races there.
“I hope I can give my Aussie fans and supporters a podium at Misano, so stay tuned and thanks for your support.”
