Next Gen Motorsports BMW’s Glenn Allerton has signalled his intentions early during the first free practice session at Symmons Plains’ opening round of the 2013 QBE Australian Superbike Championship in Tasmania.

Allerton rode the HP4 to the quickest lap with a 54.763s in cool conditions, as freshly painted grid slots through the final turn slightly affected the lap times to open the weekend.

It was a promising start to the season for 2008 and 2011 champion Allerton, in what was his official ASBK debut with the Pirelli tyres that Next Gen has opted for in 2013.

“It’s a good way to start the weekend, a little bit tricky with the fresh V8 grid, but overall a positive first session on the HP4 and with Pirelli,” Allerton told CycleOnline. “We’ll hopefully continue in the same direction this afternoon for qualifying.”

Second quickest was Team Suzuki’s new recruit Wayne Maxwell with a 0.348s in arrears of Allerton, while privateer SBK rookie Chas Hern (CM Racing Suzuki) continued his superb form in third, just 0.362s behind the top slot.

Completing the top five was Jamie Stauffer (Team Honda Racing), who was the final rider within a second of Allerton, and Team Suzuki’s Robbie Bugden.

The lone 20-minute qualifying session will take place this afternoon at 5:00pm.
