Current Moto2 World Championship leader Scott Redding hopes corrective surgery to fix the arm-pump problems which have plagued him in recent grands prix will see him factor at the front of the field in the crucial closing stages of the season.

The Marc VDS rider was the standout performer early in the season, carding consistent podium finishes to build a solid lead over primary championship rival, Tuenti HP 40’s Pol Espargaro.

Briton Redding was a significant 43 points clear by round five but struggled in Germany, Brno and Misano, with the last round a clear indication that action had to be taken in order to defend his title hopes.

“In Misano I lost all feeling in the fingers on my right hand and I couldn’t feel how much pressure I was putting on the brake lever,” he explained.

“The championship battle with Pol, and maybe Tito, is going to go down to the wire and I need to be completely fit if I’m to fight my corner, which is why I opted to have the surgery now, before we head overseas for three races in the same number of weekends.”

The procedure was carried out by MotoGP specialist surgeon Doctor Xavier Mir, with early indications suggesting the compartment syndrome issues had been corrected.

Despite this, Redding knows he will face a tough task to defend his 23-point advantage in Spain with some soreness still expected.

“The arm is a bit sore, but I can deal with that,” said Redding. “The most important thing is that I’m fit to race and the problem with my arm is fixed once and for all.

“I’m looking forward to this weekend; I finished on the podium in Aragon last year and my target is to do the same this time around.”
