Australia’s Moto3 title threat Jack Miller has called for tougher regulations to be placed upon qualifying etiquette after struggling to log a clean lap this afternoon at Phillip Island.

Miller will start his home grand prix from the third row in eighth position on Sunday while championship rival Alex Marquez leads the field away, leaving the 19-year-old Queenslander furious post-qualifying.

“It was a real big shame,” Miller reflected. “The second-last lap was an extremely fast lap, but our lap time depends on the exit from the last corner because the finish line is at the end of the straight and someone destroyed my lap. In the last corner I got no drive like I should and ended up eighth.”

Miller aborted what looked to be a clear final lap, refusing to tow a large group of riders slotted in behind him in the closing minutes of the session.

“I don’t see the point of completing a lap to help out the idiots that destroyed my lap,” he added. “It was a joke. You see the traffic coming up on the last corner – it was stupid, it’s unsafe, it’s just a joke. The stupidity is getting worse race by race, they need to try to do something before somebody really does get hurt.”

Still, despite his qualifying mishap, Miller is confident he can fight through the carnage and challenge for what would be a massive home victory tomorrow.

“Eighth is good enough to fight in tomorrow’s race and I think we can do a good job,” he said. “Tomorrow we will finish fine tuning some aspects of the bike and work on the rear in the warm up, in order to reach the final laps in the best possible condition.”

Miller enters tomorrow’s Australian round of the world championship second, 25 points in arrears of Marquez, with just three races remaining in his Moto3 career before stepping up to the premier MotoGP ranks with LCR Honda in 2015.
