Multi-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo will attempt a return to racing this weekend at Sepang’s penultimate round of the 2018 MotoGP World Championship, despite undergoing surgery on his wrist last week.

The Ducati Team rider initially suffered the injury in practice at the Thai grand prix before endeavouring to line-up at Japan, where he ultimately made the call to repair the damage.

Lorenzo is still unsure if he’ll be at an adequate level to race around the challenging Malaysian circuit, although he’s set to receive one more check-up today by medical staff before taking to the track tomorrow.

“Only eight days have passed since I had an operation on the ligament of my left wrist, but I’m feeling a bit better,” said Lorenzo. “For sure the operation was quite recent and so we’ll have to wait until I get on the bike to see how the wrist responds and if I still have a lot of pain when I ride.

“On Thursday I’ll go to the circuit medical staff for a check-up on my condition and I hope to be able to race even though I won’t be at 100 percent. I haven’t been able to train for the past few days and the Sepang circuit is very challenging, so this is not exactly an ideal scenario to return to the track.”

Missing the last three grand prix has demoted the Spaniard to ninth in the championship with just two rounds remaining, marking the end of his time with Ducati before transitioning to Repsol Honda in 2019.
