WSBK: Haslam tops day one of Valencia World Superbike test

Alstare Suzuki’s Leon Haslam has topped the opening day of World Superbike testing at Valencia in Spain overnight, riding the 2010 model GSX-R1000 to a 1:34.5 on a warm day at 4.005 kilometre the circuit.

Next fastest proved to be Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing), who edged out former double world champion James Toseland (Yamaha Sterilgarda), making his return to WSBK after two seasons in MotoGP.

Toseland, like fourth fastest man Jonathan Rea (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) fell today, although both riders were unhurt.

World Supersport Champion Cal Crutchlow, sporting a new helmet design with championship cycling multi-coloured stripes, was fifth fastest and just over half a second off the pace of Haslam, while Leon Camier (Aprilia Racing) tied on times with new Ten Kate Honda signing Max Neukirchner.

Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli (Alstare Suzuki) was the eighth and final rider to lap at Valencia in the two day test, set to continue this evening.

In World Supersport testing that only featured the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda riders, Kenan Sofuoglu and Michele Pirro set 1:36.8 and 1:37.1 lap times respectively, faster than the quickest of the Moto2 machines that shared the track during the test.

The grand prix bikes were just slightly off the pace of the Sofuoglu, with Australian Anthony West fastest for MZ with a best lap of 1:37.4. See separate story for full details from the Moto2 test.
