Villopoto has been ruled out of the 2010 AMA Supercross season.

Villopoto has been ruled out of the 2010 AMA Supercross season.

Monster Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto has been ruled out of the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, after breaking his lower right leg and injuring his ankle at St. Louis on Saturday night.

Villopoto and championship rival Ryan Dungey battled hard in St. Louis for the opening 10 laps of the main event, battling back and forth before clashing as Villopoto attempted a block pass on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki rival.

Villopoto got up and going first before his second crash of the final came, this time seeing him fall hard over the triple jump, suffering a broken leg according to sources from within the Monster Kawasaki team.

The end result now leaves class rookie Dungey with a commanding 37-point lead with just three rounds remaining, however the Suzuki rider is now 77 points ahead of third place Josh Hill – meaning he is the 2010 AMA Supercross Champion with just 75 points up for grabs in the three rounds remaining.

Villopoto is recovering after successful surgery to set and stabilise his broken right leg, however he will likely need an additional surgery when the swelling subsides.

“This is heartbreaking for both Ryan and the team,” said Monster Energy Kawasaki team manager Mike Fisher. “RV was going for the championship and riding really well. It’s a shame this happened because Ryan has shown so much resilience this season while trying to attain his first supercross championship. I know Ryan will do everything he can to get back as soon as possible.”

Villopoto will remain in the hospital in St. Louis until he is able to travel back to California, thanking all his fans for their thoughts, prayers, and support during this tough time.
