ASBK: Maxwell admits hard work is needed to stop Staring

Maxwell finished third overall in Queensland last weekend.

Maxwell finished third overall in Queensland last weekend.

Demolition Plus GAS Honda’s Wayne Maxwell has admitted that there’s a lot of work to do for he and the team before the series returns to the Queensland Raceway in August if they are to deny last weekend’s winner Bryan Staring of repeating another double victory.

Although the 27-year-old Victorian put in a blistering lap of 1:10.244 set late Saturday to score Superpole just ahead of eventual round winner Cougar Bourbon Honda’s Staring, Maxwell had to settle for third overall for the round.

“We had the pace early on and full credit to my team who helped me get there,” said Maxwell. “Unfortunately I did struggle a bit to gain any ground during racing and got a bit of arm pump in the first one. The weekend wasn’t meant to be mine but congratulations to Bryan who put in a great performance.

“We’ve got a lot of work in front of us now before we come back here to Ipswich for the next round.”

Team manager Geoff Winzer said they will be working toward improving consistency prior to the next Australian meeting.

“Saturday everything was on target and we couldn’t have asked anymore from Wayne,” he said. “The bike never missed a beat, but it is motorsport and anything can happen. Hondas are looking good and we’re leading the Manufacturer’s Championship so it’s going to be a great series. There isn’t much between the top three.”

Maxwell now sits on 110.5 points in second position behind Staring’s 115 points, while defending champion Josh Waters sites third on 104.5.
