Australian Superbike title leader Glenn Allerton has stormed to a second victory of the weekend at Barbagallo Raceway’s fourth round of the 2011 title chase in Western Australia this morning.

Procon Maxima BMW Racing’s Allerton won his sixth of the season to extend his series lead to a massive 58 points at the halfway point of the season, this time winning the second 15-lap affair of the weekend by 1.517 seconds.

With his victory, Allerton also claimed a new lap record of the undulating Barbagallo circuit, his 55.533 setting the new benchmark.

“This weekend has been an awesome one for the team and it’s great to come back to Perth and show the strengths of the BMW to such a big crowd,” said Allerton.

“We knew that everyone would be searching for more grip after yesterday’s race so got together and made some changes to the bike to make it a bit better.

“Over race distance it came on strong again and was super quick. I can’t thank the team enough for putting everything they have behind me.”

Finishing second once again was Team Honda Racing’s Wayne Maxwell, who boosted himself up to sixth in the standings, while 2003 champion Craig Coxhell was a season-best third for Demolition Plus GAS Honda Racing.

While a race win continues to elude Maxwell, Team Honda’s foray to Perth was vastly more successful than their horror run at Hidden Valley, and the Victorian is not giving up the fight yet.

“It’s good to get two strong finishes on the board but we’ve still got a way to go to catch Glenn who is riding with a lot of confidence,” said Maxwell.

“The team has turned things around this weekend and the parts we have been testing seem to be pointing us in the right direction.

“There’s a good break before Queensland and again we’ll be putting in a lot of work to try and bridge the gap.”

Early race leader Coxhell crossed the line just a couple of tenths behind Maxwell, also edging out Maxwell’s dual ASBK champion teammate Jame Stauffer by half a second.

“It’s been a better weekend for Team Honda and we’ve managed to bounce back strongly here in Perth,” said Stauffer.

“We’ve got a way to go now and we’ll put our heads down now to prepare for the next round.”

Allerton is on track for a second ASBK title, now holding a 58-point lead with Procon Maxima BMW Racing.

Completing the top five was Suzuki satellite rider Robbie Bugden, who narrowly fended off i-Style The Natural Aprilia’s Ben Attard for the position. The top six were separated by just 3.106 seconds at the race’s conclusion.

Returning Victorian Scott Charlton got the best of a Team Suzuki dual for seventh over teammate Troy Herfoss, with another returnee in Dan Stauffer a solid ninth on debut for DGS Ducati.

Rounding out the top 10 was NSW Compensation Lawyers-backed GAS Honda rider Cole Odendaal after a tight tussle with Stauffer.

Top Prostock finisher was Team Suzuki’s Brodie Waters in 15th overall, while Linden Magee was second aboard a BMW and Brett Simmonds (Honda) third.

Overall for the weekend, it was Allerton who took his third overall of the season, with Maxwell and Jamie Stauffer rounding out the podium.

In the Superbike title standings, Allerton leads by 58 over rookie standout Herfoss, who is one point ahead of Attard. Coxhell is a further six behind in fourth, while Jamie Stauffer is fifth.

Fans can catch the action on Channel Seven this afternoon on V8Xtra, which will be aired at 1:00pm AEST (check local guide for confirmation).
