Matt Davies has won the Silverstone round of the European Junior Cup at the World Superbikes in the UK over the weekend in what was a crucial win in terms of the championship.

Davies now leads the championship by two points from German rider Tom Busch, who finished fourth at Silverstone.

Going into the UK round Davies was seven points behind championship leader Busch and it was imperative for him to win to keep the championship within reach with only two more rounds remaining.

The identical Kawasaki 250 machines which are used for the European Junior Cup have provided some intense close racing over the last three rounds and the fourth round at Silverstone was no exception.

This was the first time Davies had not sat on Pole for the whole competition with Irish 125cc hotshot Adam McLean taking pole by half a second. The remaining front row was Spaniard Rueben Fennoll second, Davies third and Busch fourth.

A seven-way battle was on right from the green light with the lead swapping continuously.

Davies took the lead on lap two to hold off all challenges for the remainder of the race to take the chequered flag by 0.503 and his fourth win of the series from Fennoll in second and McLean in third.

The next round of the European Junior Cup will be at Nurburgring in Germany on 2-4 September.
