Yamaha Racing Team celebrate Kevin Curtain's FX titles on Sunday.

Kevin Curtain locked down both the FX600cc and FX Superbike Championship after the penultimate round of the Australian FX Superbike Championship was held at Wakefield Park, New South Wales, over the weekend.

Curtain had to endure a challenging weekend of vastly different weather and track conditions, a fall during Saturday’s racing and a spirited effort from fellow competitors to secure the championship victory in what was another triumphant weekend for the Yamaha Racing Team.

On board the Yamaha R6, Curtain claimed another perfect round taking three wins from three starts and included a new lap record on his way to victory lane. The Wakefield track was fast as race conditions were almost ideal and Curtain cashed in on the fast track on his powerhouse R6 to win the round and put the exclamation point on his 2011 championship victory.

But there was a far greater challenge waiting for Curtain in the FX Superbike class. Coming up against the Cullen Brothers, both armed with plenty of track knowledge and quality racing skills, Curtain battled valiantly all day to register 2-2-2 results from his three races and claim second overall for the round but more importantly stretch his lead to an unreachable 76.5 points with one round and only 75 points up for grabs.

“For while there I didn’t think I would be able to get it done this weekend as we had a terrible day on the Saturday and struggled to get any real momentum. Fortunately, the team worked hard over night to get the bike right, I was able to focus on racing and we managed to get it done, so I’m happy about that,” Curtain explains.

“It’s nice to win the FX championship again and this year feels good as I really had to work for it and especially today with the Cullen brothers setting such a fast pace.”

“I can’t thank the YRT guys enough with John, Kevin, Ryan and Geoff working tirelessly to get us exactly the bikes we need and that makes me job that little bit easier.”

There is little time to celebrate the success of Curtain as the month of November is a busy period for YRT. The final round of the FX Superbike championship, followed by a scheduled test session and the last ASBK round will see the team finish of the season in a flurry and no time to waste.
