Team Suzuki’s Josh Waters will start the opening round of the Australian Superbike Championship from pole position after setting the pace in Superpole at Phillip Island.

Waters posted a 1:33.438 to edge out provisional pole-sitter Wayne Maxwell’s (Team Honda Racing) 1:33.477 in what was a spectacular session for the domestic Superbikes.

Maxwell’s teammate Jamie Stauffer locked in third on the grid with a 1:34.000, while Queenslander Robbie Bugden rounds out the front row with a 1:34.920.

In Supersport it was Mitchell Carr who continued to set the pace with pole for InsureMyRide/AARK Racing Triumph, topping Brodie Waters (Team Suzuki), Mike Jones (YRD Yamaha) and rookie Josh Hook (Team Honda Racing).

Tragically, the first Australian Supersport race of the weekend was red flagged when young Queenslander Oscar McIntyre was involved in a multi-bike incident and sadly lost his life.

Race one of the Superbikes is scheduled to be contested at 10:05am, while race two will be broadcast live on Speed TV when it’s run at 2.30pm in between the WSBK races.
