Team Ducati Alstare’s Ayrton Badovini claimed victory in a weather-affected World Superbike Championship Superpole session at the Nurbugring, comfortable in the variable conditions that saw a shake-up of the grid.

The result marks the Panigale 1199 R’s second pole position of the season after teammate Carlos Checa secured pole at the season opener at Phillip Island.

Rain began to fall lightly prior to the start of the session, with officials declaring the session wet. The greasy track suited Badovini, who headed both 20-minute sessions.

Second place went to BMW Motorrad GoldBet’s Marco Melandri, with Tom Sykes claiming third aboard the Kawasaki Racing Team entry despite a late crash.

Sykes’ teammate Loris Baz was fourth-fastest, from the Pata Honda World Superbike pairing of Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam.

Chaz Davies brought the second BMW home in seventh, with points leader Sylvain Guintoli a disappointing eighth. Jules Cluzel was ninth, with Max Neukirchner rounding out the top 10.

Aussie Mark Aitchison missed Superpole by a single place, and will start Sunday’s races from 16th on the grid.

Yakhnich Motorsport’s Sam Lowes grabbed his eighth pole position of the season in the World Supersport class, with title rival Kenan Sofuoglu alongside. Fabien Foret, teammate to Sofuoglu, rounds out the front row on the second Mahi Racing Team India Kawasaki.

Row two consists of Vladimir Leonov, Lorenzo Zanetti and Jack Kenndy, while row three features Kev Coghlan, Ronan Quarmby and Roberto Tamburini.

Jed Metcher was the best-placed Aussie in class, with 25th position on the Team Suzuki Mayer mount. Matt Davies was 33rd, while Mitchell Carr was 36th.

Superstock 1000 pole position was achieved by Sylvain Barrier, while the Superstock 600 race win went the way of Franco Morbidelli from Alessandro Nocco and Christian Gamarino.

Adrian Nestorovic made good ground in the race to finish seventh on hi MTM-MVR Racing Team Yamaha.

Jake Lewis took pole for the European Junior Cup one-make class, with Aussie Zac Levy in 26th.
