Kawasaki Racing Team’s Tom Sykes and BMW Motorrad GoldBet’s Chaz Davies claimed race wins on an eventful day of World Superbike Championship competition at the Nurburgring in Germany.

Davies’ BMW teammate Marco Melandri assumed the early lead in race one, but was quickly overtaken by the charging Sykes who would establish a steady rhythm out the front.

He was pursued by the BMWs until the closing stages, before leaking oil from Federico Sandi’s expired Pedercini Kawasaki saw chaos ensue.

Pata Honda’s Jonathan Rea and FIXI Crescent Suzuki’s Leon Camier both crashed heavily on the oil spill, forcing officials to immediately wave the red flags and declare the race run.

Up front, Melandri had made a successful pass on Sykes, but with the race results taken from the previous lap, Sykes was awarded the win.

Aprilia’s Sylvain Guintoli took solid points for fourth, with Davide Giugliano grabbing fifth.

Michel Fabrizio, Leon Haslam, Jules Cluzel, Ayrton Badovini and Carlos Checa occupied positions six through 10, with Australia’s Mark Aitchison putting in a solid ride for 11th.

A depleted field lined up for the second Superbike race of the day, which was again ended under red flag conditions.

Chaz Davies took the spoils from Eugene Laverty and Melandri, with Sykes in fourth and Guintoli fifth.

Davies, Laverty and Melandri fought a frenetic battle at the front of the field, which concluded prematurely when Yamaha Motor Deutschland wildcard rider Matej Smrz suffered a huge high side crash on lap 19.

Giugliano, Badovini, Fabrizio, Max Neukirchner and Checa sealed the final half of the top 10, with Aitchison again finishing strongly in 11th.

Sykes’ win and fourth place see him claw his way back to the top of the championship ladder, albeit by a single point, over Guintoli.

Supersport race spoils went the way of form runner Sam Lowes once again, the Yakhnich Yamaha rider taking the win over Fabien Foret and Kev Coghlan.

Frontrunner Kenan Sofuoglu was a non-finisher after crashing, losing valuable ground to Lowes who has now built a 54-point buffer at the top of the table.

Aussie Jed Metcher continued his strong wildcard run on the Team Suzuki Mayer entry, moving to 17th at the wave of the chequers.

Fellow Australians Matt Davies and Mitchell Carr battled to 26th and 29th respectively.

Leandro Mercardo took a vital race win in the Superstock 1000 field, pegging back some points on runaway leader Sylvain Barrier, who finished second ahead of Niccolo Canepa.

Franco Morbidelli won the Superstock 600 stoush from Alessandro Nocco and Christian Gamarino, with Aussie Adrian Nestorovic making good ground on his grid position to take seventh.

Morbidelli leads the points race after seven of nine rounds, with Nestorovic competitive in eighth.

European Junior Cup race victory went the way of Bo Bendsneijder, with Kevin Manfredi second, and Robin Anne third.

It was a tough outing for Aussie Zac Levy, a non-finisher in the class.
