The first exercise within MotoGP’s Keep it Shiny and Sustainable (KiSS) project has been deemed a success, with the championship to continue to roll out measures to reduce its environmental footprint at upcoming events.

Launched in May, KiSS first featured at the Mugello Grand Prix in Italy, with the introduction of various recycling facilities to reduce the total output of waste.

Of a total of 90 tonnes of waste produced, 17 were recyclable. 12.6 tonnes of plastic, aluminium and glass were removed from the facility, along with 4.5 tonnes of wet material.

The exercise took the five-man on-ground KiSS crew a total of 15 days to complete.

“We are proud to be the first circuit to launch an initiative that will be repeated at many other sports venues,” said Paolo Poli, chief executive of the Mugello circuit.

“The data for this KiSS Mugello “premiere” are encouraging, and provide us with an impetus to continue along these lines, together with our partners, according to this format.

“We are already planning a number of changes to make the next edition of the programme an even greater success.”

In light of the success, the MotoGP will roll out the KiSS program at this weekend’s upcoming round at Spain’s Motorland Aragon.

A host of large local companies are backing the KiSS project in Spain, backed by local government. The Aragon region is said to be one of the country’s largest producers of renewable energy.
