BMW’s Markus Reiterberger secured the 2013 IDM German Superbike Championship title at Hockenheim.

Van Zon Remeha BMW’s Markus Reiterberger recorded 1-1 race finishes at Hockenheim to confirm himself as the 2013 IDM German Superbike Champion with a round still to run.

Reiterberger came into the penultimate round with a considerable points margin, scoring points at all six outings to date as his title rivals suffered a run of mixed fortunes.

He needed to achieve a race win in the opener and have Aussie opponent Damian Cudlin finish no higher than third to lock down the championship, a scenario that played out to the letter.

Reiterberger took the win from Arie Vos who was 2.286 seconds in arrears, with Cudlin just over five seconds back to complete the podium.

Fourth went to Monster Energy Deutschland rider, Aussie Gareth Jones, who shadowed Cudlin to the line, with Michael Ranseder closing out fifth.

A third Australian rider was a surprise inclusion on the weekend roster, with Mark Aitchison subbing for Matej Smrz on the second factory Yamaha to take seventh place.

Reiterberger topped the podium in the second race to complete his championship-winning weekend, followed by a trio of Aussies. Cudlin carded second from Jones in third, while Aitchison continued his forwards progress to finish a solid fourth.

The Van Zon Remeha BMW rider was relieved to wrap up the title in the first race, allowing him to cruise to the finish line in the second.

“How I wished for it that I get the first run and then I can ski for free,” said Reiterberger. “Now we can celebrate and party. In the last round I went, with nine seconds ahead and was completely relaxed. In the last corner I removed the gas and am just rolled to the finish.”

Early title favourite Cudlin congratulated his young opponent on his consistency in the race for the 2013 championship.

“In the first half of the season the overall lead was firmly in hand, but to be champion at the end also requires a lot of luck,” said Cudlin.

“The projection of Reiti in the table and also in the race was incredible, I have to admit he did a really good job.

“He got points in every race and was on the podium at least once in every event. I don’t really care whether I finish second or third, the title was my goal.”

Jones’ 4-3 finishes have him in striking distance of third-placed Michael Ranseder with a round remaining, and he’s hoping to make back the gap to secure a top three finish for the year.

“I have now had two good races and even see the opportunity to displace Michi Ranseder in the final at the Lausitzring for third place on the overall standings,” said Jones. “I’ve worked so hard on success and honestly wish it works.”

In the Supersport ranks, Kevin Wahr took both wins on his Team RS Wahr EHC Yamaha R6 to extend his class points lead.

Stefan Kerschbaumer and Philippe von Gunten finished second and third in race one, while Roman Stamm and Jan Buhn completed the podium for race two.

Team Suzuki Mayer Aussie Jed Metcher carded two top five finishes and now sits just a single point shy of a top five championship placing in the class.

The Lausitzring will host the series finale on 11-13 October.
