Australia’s Josh Brookes has completed a dominant triple win at a climactic final round of the British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch.

The Tyco Suzuki frontrunner had entered the Showdown as a title contender but misfortune over past few rounds had effectively ruled him out of the running.

Determined to end his season on a high note, Brookes backed up his win in Saturday’s race with a sweep of both Sunday races, managing changeable conditions at the front of the field.

Race two opened in dramatic circumstances, with title challenger Samsung Honda’s Alex Lowes crashing out in the wet conditions on the opening lap.

Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne also crashed out, ensuring the championship battle would be reset ahead of the final race.

A host of riders took turns at leading the eventful affair before Brookes made his move up the order, taking the lead from Hasall Racing Kawasaki’s Lee Costello on the final lap and winning by just 0.196s.

James Ellison was third aboard his Milwaukee Yamaha, with James Westmoreland (BMW) fourth and Chris Walker (Kawasaki) fifth.

12 riders failed to finish the incident packed race, including the second Aussie in the field, Josh Waters.

Brookes led the final race of the season from start to finish, but much of the attention was focused on the two riders behind him as they fought it out one last time for the title.

Starting down the field by virtue of their race two DNFs, Lowes and Byrne began a forwards march through the pack, and soon found themselves running line of stern in second and third.

Byrne had the edge and the title in his grasp momentarily, but Lowes countered and took the advantage which he maintained until the wave of the chequered flag, confirming a maiden class title and becoming the youngest rider in the championship’s history to achieve such a feat.

Just seven points separate the pair at the conclusion of 12 hard-fought rounds – 643 played 636 – with Brookes confirming third place on 621 points.

Waters was able to recover from his race two DNF for another positive top 10 result on the Halsall Kawasaki, finishing 10th and confirming a final finish of 13th in his maiden BSB season.

The Supersport feature was also affected by rain, with a red flag early in the piece shortening the race to just 15 laps.

MartTrain Yamaha’s Stuart Easton took the race win and confirmed his second class title, with Richard Cooper running second and Alastair Seeley third.

Smiths Triumph’s Glen Richards was fourth, the only Australian rider to finish the race after Jason O’Halloran (Samsung Honda) and Billy McConnell (Smiths Triumph) both crashed out of contention in the trying conditions.

It proved a race of attrition, with 13 of the 29 riders not making it to the finish line.

Despite the misfortune, McConnell managed to hold onto third place in the title race, with Jason O’Halloran sixth after a promising yet ultimately luckless season. Richards finish two places back in eighth.

Adam Jenkinson took the win in the final Superstock 1000 bout of the season but it wasn’t enough to deny Hudson Kennaugh, who finished a conservative seventh in the race, the class title.

Likewise it was Yamaha-mounted Callan Cooper who took the Superstock 600 win but eighth-place finisher Luke Hedger who amassed enough points to confirm himself champion.

Mark Wilkinson was the lead Aussie finisher in the class in 21st, with Levi Day 25th and James Mutton 28th.

Day rounded out the championship in 11th from Wilkinson in 12th, while Mutton came home in 28th.
