Team Motul Honda’s Wayne Maxwell won all three races of today’s second YMF-Loan Australian FX-Superbike Championship at Mallala in South Australia.

Maxwell won the overall from former teammate Robbie Bugden (YRT with YMI Yamaha) and round one winner Glenn Scott (Team InsureMyRide Racing Honda), ahead of tomorrow’s Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship round.

Team Honda Racing’s Jamie Stauffer led the opening laps of race one comfortably before fading down the order, allowing Bugden and teammate Cru Halliday to lead until Maxwell struck in the closing two laps for victory.

Race two was all Maxwell from the front, taking over the lead in turn one from Halliday and was never headed. The battle for second was closer however, with Jones slicing his way past the Yamaha of Bugden for second, with the latter securing third.

Meanwhile, Sean Condon’s (BikeBiz Racing Kawasaki) hopes of a podium were dashed when he crashed at the final turn after an entertaining battle with Mike Jones (Crazy Dogs Kawasaki) and Bugden.

The final race was another Maxwell clinic, however this time he had company in the form of Bugden – fending him off on the final lap as lapped traffic came between them. Third was Scott, who made major improvements over the course of Saturday to cap it off with a podium.

“It’s a great way to start this weekend and now we will turn our attention to tomorrow,” Maxwell said. “Team Honda Racing had a bit of a plan today, we didn’t quite manage to get pole, but it’s a Honda 1-2 for tomorrow’s grid and that will do.”

Jones was himself impressive for fourth overall, like Scott making progress as the races went on. Halliday was fifth after himself featuring at the front throughout the round, making headway in his second official superbike appearance.

Troy Herfoss (Team Honda Racing) had a quiet debut with the team fulltime, but managed to score sixth overall for the round. Rick Olson rode the third of the Yamaha’s to a consistent seventh, tied with Herfoss.

Current number one plate holder Matt Walters (Kawasaki Connection) was eighth, with Stauffer and Condon completing the top 10.

Fourth Honda rider Josh Hook’s return to national level racing was a difficult one, crashing out of race one before missing the second. He returned for the final outing and took 13th, ultimately ending up a lowly 19th overall.

Two-time Australian champion Glenn Allerton battled injury throughout Saturday on the Next Gen Motorsports BMW, his only finish coming in race two for 19th after pitting. He sat out the final race.

Stauffer forfeited results in Saturday in favour of scoring a strong grid position for Sunday’s Swann Series, eventually posting a time quick enough for pole with a 1m07.083 on his way to 17th place in race three.

In Supersport it was an Aaron Morris whitewash with all three race wins in a frustrating day for South Australian Daniel Falzon, who crashed in races one and three.

Falzon was in the battle for victory alongside Morris and Queensland duo Callum Spriggs and Aiden Wagner, but will have to seek redemption on Sunday if he’s to feature on the podium at home this weekend.

Spriggs rode to second overall with a trio of runner-up results, while Wagner was directly behind him in third with a tally of 3-4-3 for the round.

Meanwhile Falzon was credited seventh for the round after he was able to remount on both occasions he went down, also claiming third in the second leg.

He did salvage the all-important pole position for Sunday’s races with a 1m08.695 in the final outing while chasing down Morris before he crashed.
