Another dramatic affair sees Stauffer take charge of the title race.
Team Honda Racing’s Josh Hook captured his first Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship round victory at Queensland Raceway on Sunday aboard the CBR1000RR SP.
Hook won the overall from teammates Jamie Stauffer and Troy Herfoss in a podium sweep for the factory Honda contingent, after what was an action-filled trio of 10-lap races.
Race was all Stauffer, streaking off with a consistent mid-sector of the race in the low 1m09s to eventually win by a convincing 1.399s.
Teammate Hook was again impressive after a mixed weekend at Mallala, covering for the runner-up while featherweight Queenslander Mike Jones (Crazy Dogs Kawasaki) starred on his way to third – challenging Hook all the way.
Saturday winner Herfoss was a lonely fourth, with Cru Halliday (YRT with YMI), Glenn Scott (Honda), Robbie Bugden (YRT with YMI), Rick Olson (YRT with YMI), Linden Magee (LMR BMW) and Ben Burke (BC Performance A1 Kawasaki).
Reigning ASC number one plate holder Matt Walters (Kawasaki Connection) put forward his best performance of the season, running as high as fourth on lap one, before a loose left handlebar saw him fade to 11th.
It was the lap six incident involving Sean Condon (Bikebiz Ipone Swann Insurance Racing Kawasaki), Wayne Maxwell (Team Motul Honda) and Glenn Allerton (Next Gen Motorsports BMW) that made the headlines though, as Condon crashed into Maxwell, who crashed into Allerton in a domino effect.
Maxwell returned to the track for six points in 15th, while Allerton soldiered on to 18th for three points after he crashed heavily, and Condon was ruled out on the spot.
Come race two Allerton charged into the lead early from fifth on the grid, covering the inside as he struggled to flow on the potent Next Gen Motorsports BMW.
Allerton fended off the Hondas, with Hook desperately charging forward from 10th on lap one all the way up to second, but a pass on Allerton wasn’t to be.
The eventual winning margin for Allerton was 0.112s over Hook, followed by Maxwell, Herfoss, Stauffer, Jones, Scott, Condon, Bugden and Halliday.
Race three saw Allerton take victory by the narrowest of margins, just 0.032s over Herfoss after the pair drag-raced to the line – a full second and a half clear of the field. Allerton set a new lap record of 1m09.177 in the process on lap four.
Hook’s third was enough to secure him the overall, edging out teammates Stauffer and Maxwell, with Condon directly behind them in another strong showing on the ZX-10R.
Bugden fought his way to seventh this time in his best result of the round, with Magee and Halliday finishing the top 10.
In the championship it’s now Stauffer the title leader on 190 points, 11 clear of Maxwell – fifth overall today – and Herfoss is third following a standout performance.
Allerton was both fourth today and is fourth in the championship, followed by the top Yamaha of Halliday in a solid fifth position after three rounds.
