Queenslander Callum Spriggs is targeting a return to racing at Winton’s fourth round of the Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship (ASC) after crashing out of Supersport title contention at Queensland Raceway last weekend.

Spriggs, who now lies in fourth place in the standings 63 points behind Aaron Morris, anticipates a quick recovery from his broken collarbone in a bid to make the grid at Winton.

Spriggs suffered a broken left collarbone and a detached lung in the crash, which came following a scary high-speed front brake failure entering turn six – potentially from loose caliper bolts.

“It’s disappointing as I was hoping to go well at my home round and try and keep my points lead,” Spriggs told CycleOnline.com.au. “I’ll probably be out for about six weeks, but I hope to be back at Winton in about five weeks time and be fit enough to get some points for the championship.”

Spriggs went under the knife on Wednesday and reflected on the incident post-race. He’s ruled out any real shot at the title – claiming it a long shot at best.

“I just came into turn four and it just felt like that my brakes pulled on a little bit through turn four,” he reflected. “I knew something wasn’t right, so I just braked a little bit earlier and I had no front brakes.

“It will be hard [to win the title], that’s for sure! Depends what happens, I might be lucky, but I will have to win a lot of races and a something will have to happen to the others for myself to go well.”

The Winton round will take place in Country Victoria on 1-3 August.
