Giugliano tops Friday WSBK practice at Magny-Cours

The afternoon session at Magny-Cours finished with Italian Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team) setting the fastest time in 1m37.866s, to head the combined classification after FP1 and FP2.

With only Leon Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) and Claudio Corti (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) failing to improve out of the top 20 riders in the overall standings, the 45-minute session was fast and furious with five manufacturers represented in the first six places.

Behind Giugliano, Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) was second ahead of the morning’s pace setter Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team).

Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team), Marco Melandri (Aprilia Racing Team) and reigning champion Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) completed the top six with Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team), Chaz Davies (Ducati Superbike Team), Alex Lowes (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) and Leon Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) filling the remaining places inside the top 10.

Niccolò Canepa (Althea Racing Ducati) made a huge step forward, moving into 14th overall and in doing so becoming the best classified EVO rider, while Australian Bryan Staring is 23rd on the Grillini Kawasaki.

After topping FP1, newly crowned World Supersport Champion Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda) continues to dominate World Supersport, ending the opening day of action at Magny-Cours on top of the standings after improving his morning time on his final lap of FP2.

Roberto Tamburini (San Carlo Puccetti Racing Kawasaki) elevated himself to second in the final minute ahead of the sensation of the day, wildcard rider Lucas Mahias (MG Competition) Yamaha who finished a very impressive third. Australian Matt Davies was 27th overall for the private AARK Racing Team.

Of the other Aussies, EAB Racing Ducati’s Jed Metcher was 16th in Superstock 1000 and Brandon Demmery 17th in the European Junior Cup category.
