Team Honda Racing’s Troy Herfoss has claimed a vital round victory at Wakefield Park’s fifth round of the 2015 Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship today.

The Goulburn-based local starred on Sunday with the first and third race wins, while race two belonged to Yamaha Racing Team with Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance (YRT with YMI) rider Glenn Allerton.

Herfoss claimed the first Ipone Superbike race win of Sunday’s proceedings, controlling the pace at the front across 12 laps and eventually taking a 0.868s victory.

In second was Allerton, who managed to fend off any advancements from teammate Wayne Maxwell throughout the race, rounding out the podium.

Herfoss’ teammate Jamie Stauffer brought his CBR1000RR SP home in fourth, while Mike Jones (Australian Outdoor Living – Cube Racing) led a trio of Kawasakis in fifth from Matthew Walters (Kawasaki Connection) and a brave Sean Condon (BikeBiz / Ipone / Swann Insurance Racing Kawasaki), returning from a shoulder injury sustained yesterday.

Completing the top 10 was Linden Magee (LMR Honda), William Davidson (Yamaha) and Evan Byles (SA Kawasaki Bcperformance). Cru Halliday (YRT with YMI) overcame his crashes from Saturday to finish 11th.

The second Superbike race had a familiar feeling at the front with Herfoss leading early, however it was Allerton who was on a charge this time out, first making his way by teammate Maxwell before storming past Herfoss and building a quick buffer on lap four.

The latter stages of the race saw Herfoss home back in on Allerton and he did have a shot at victory on the final lap in the ‘fishhook’, but the lunge put him off the track and allowed Jones through in the process.

So Allerton was the winner by a commanding 3.173s advantage over Jones and Herfoss, with Maxwell cruising home to fourth and Stauffer fifth.

Positions six through 10 were filled by Walters, Halliday, Magee, Ben Burke (SA Kawasaki Bcperformance) in his first appearance today and Davidson. Byles was the final finisher in 11th, with Condon this time a non-finisher after exiting on lap eight.

A strong final race victory for Herfoss by 0.729s secured him the overall victory at Wakefield Park this afternoon, extending his championship lead to 16 points in the process.

Herfoss led the race from the outset and was never headed, while the race behind him for second was an intriguing one between a hard-charging Walters, Maxwell and Allerton – including a touch between the YRT riders in the final laps.

They finished in the order however, with Stauffer completing the top five, trailed by Jones, Burke, Condon, Halliday and Magee. Rounding out the field was Davidson and Byles.

Overall for the round it was Herfoss the victor, beating home Allerton and Maxwell, which in championship terms sees Herfoss lead Maxwell by 16 points, with Allerton a further 10 in arrears.

Hankook Suzuki’s Brayden Elliott claimed an important race win to open the Supersport ranks for today from well down in 10th on the grid, making his way past Callum Spriggs (Yamaha) in the final stages to take a 0.027s victory.

The race saw an entertaining scrap between Elliott, Spriggs and Rick Olson (Kawasaki), who was eventually third and just 0.455s off the lead.

In fourth was Michael Blair (Yamaha), holding off Saturday winner Kyle Buckley (Kawasaki), while Jay Presepio (Yamaha), Luke Mitchell (Yamaha), Brad Swallow (Kawasaki), Troy Guenther (Kawasaki) and Cambridge Olivier (Yamaha) completed the top 10.

Race two of the Supersports was dominated by Spriggs, leading every lap for his first win of today and applying further pressure to Elliott in the battle for the championship.

While Spriggs ultimately crossed the finish line 3.102s ahead of the field after nine laps, the battle for the final podium placings was hard fought.

Blair made it a Yamaha 1-2 after he held on for second, taking advantage of a lapped rider on the final corner, as Elliott had to settle for third after again making his way through the pack.

Presepio finished fourth over Buckley, while Mitchell, Cambridge Olivier (Yamaha), Swallow, Thomas Bryden (Yamaha) and Troy Guenther (Kawasaki) rounded out the top 10 finishers. Disaster struck Olson, crashing out on lap four and scoring a DNF.

The final Supersport race of the round proved that Buckley’s overall win yesterday was no fluke in the mixed conditions, racing to victory ahead of round winner Spriggs, who is now just six points outside of Elliott in the title chase.

While Buckley crossed the line 1.149s in front of Spriggs, third was a good result from Elliott, who continues to lead the championship after taking the runner up overall.

Fourth in the race belonged to Blair after he marginally missed the podium, followed by Presepio, Mitchell, Olivier, Swallow, Bryden and Paul Young (Kawasaki).

Series leader Paul Young stretched his FX300 Ninja Cup advantage with a trio of wins today, ahead of Ryan Masri’s 2-2-3 scorecard, while Robbie Menzies went climbed the order with four, three, two finishes.

In the Formula Oz ranks it was Ducati-mounted Beau Beaton who claimed the overall with two wins, from title leader and race one winner Paul Byrne (Honda) and Mitch Paynter (Kawasaki).

The Pro-Twins/Nakedbike category was won by experienced Ducati campaigner Craig McMartin over Liam Wilkinson and Beaton, plus within the same race, winner of the Formula Xtremes was Brenden McIntyre from Jason Martin and Michael Witchard.
