World champion Jonathan Rea has set the fastest time in this morning’s World Superbike pre-season test at a sweltering Phillip Island.

Rea, second fastest on day one behind Kawasaki teammate Tom Sykes, went one better this morning with a best lap of 1m31.249s.

The Northern Irishman was followed by Italy’s Davide Giugliano (Ducati, 1m31.400s), Honda’s Michael van der Mark (1m31.458s) and 2014 world champion Sylvain Guintoli (1m31.473s), who’s really starting to find some form on the Yamaha.

Less than a second covered the top 10 riders, which may be a sign of how close the racing may get at this weekend’s season-opening round back at Phillip Island.

American hotshot Nicky Hayden was sixth on his Honda (1m31.585s), from Sykes (1m31.885s), world number two Chaz Davies (Ducati, 1m31.938s), Xavi Fores (Ducati, 1m31.958s) and Jordi Torres (BMW Motorrad, 1m32.109s), who went down during the two-hour session.

Aussie riders Josh Brookes (BMW Motorrad, 1m32.903s), Mike Jones (Ducati, 1m33.420s) and Josh Hook (Kawasaki, 1m33.850s) were 15th, 17th and 19th respectively.

The last hit-out for the WorldSBK fraternity will be held from 1:30-3:30pm this afternoon, when ambient and track temperatures are expected to be extreme.

Puccetti rider Kenan Sofuoglu saw his rookie teammate Randy Krummenacher put in the fastest lap yesterday in WorldSSP testing, but day two has seen the Turkish reigning champion take back P1 in the first session.

Jules Cluzel was able to leap frogging up the order into P2 as he gets back on track after a big crash in Jerez last year, with German rider Kevin Wahr putting in a time on his Honda good enough for P3.

Top Australian was Anthony West in 13th, while Glenn Scott was 16th, Mitch levy 21st, Kane Burns 23rd, Alex Phillis 24th and Lachlan Epis 26th. Aiden Wagner crashed out of the session early on.
