Oz MX: Boyd and Simmonds best in the West at Wanneroo

Motorcycling Australia:

Cheyne Boyd (Yamaha) has won the sixth round of the 2009 Australian Motocross Championship on the western sand at Wanneroo.

Boyd now sits 20 points behind his teammate and Series leader Jay Marmont (Yamaha) who retains the red plates heading into the seventh round.

While the crowd turned up to show their support for local favourites Michael Addison (Honda) and Dean Porter (Honda) no one was sure what to expect as the riders took to the track.

As qualifying got underway anticipation was high, with everybody wondering if it would be the West Australian riders taking top honours once again, or if one of the eastern state riders could beat them to the flag.

It looked as if last year’s winner, Porter was going to clock the fastest time in qualifying but with only seconds remaining in the session Boyd clocked in almost a whole second ahead of the local.

Repeating his form from rounds four and five, Boyd scored the holeshot and broke out to an early lead in the first moto, this time challenged by Yamaha’s Andrew McFarlane.

As the two broke away it was Brent Landman (Honda) who stepped up into third, chased down by the two West Aussies Addison and Porter, with Series leader, Marmont back as far as ninth place.

At the flag, Boyd, McFarlane and Landman held onto their positions, Boyd albeit out to a nearly 20 second lead, with his teammate Marmont scraping into sixth position.

Moto two was pretty much a case of business as usual for Boyd, taking the lead within the first lap and simply putting more seconds between himself and teammate Marmont and third placed Andrew McFarlane (Yamaha).

Brief challenges came from Addison and Cody Mackie (Kawasaki) but no one was able to stop the Boyd freight train as he cross the line with 17 seconds to spare ahead of Marmont and McFarlane.

While everyone expected Boyd to dominate in the third and final moto of the day it was Marmont who stepped up, taking both the holeshot and the lead.

Boyd and Landman were close behind but soon the CDR boys broke out to a considerable lead racing against each other and the tough track while Landman battled for third with Addison.

Marmont eventually broke away from Boyd, and was more than 20 seconds ahead at the chequered flag with Landman hanging on to third place.

Quotes

Boyd – “I’m pumped, I just tried to keep on doing what I’m doing, it’s obviously working and I can’t say enough about the CDR Rockstar Yamaha team, they’ve worked so hard.

“It’s been a good run with six straight wins which unfortunately got broken today with Jay taking a win but he’s a tough rider and hat’s off to him and what’s he’s doing at the moment.

“With the points lead and stuff even though I was bummed to miss out on the three points it’s great to go one two with the team.”

Marmont – “This track…it’s tough over here, it brings the best and the worst out in us racers so to go out there and finish on a good note it great.

“We’ve got two rounds to go and Boydy has really stepped it up in this Championship.  I love a good battle so it’s going to be fun and its going to come right down to the wire.”

McFarlane – “It was a tough day today, I felt really strong in the first moto and unfortunately threw it down but that’s racing but I’m not going to make any excuses.

The CDR boys rode really well and so did the rest of the guys and I’m looking forward to the next round.”

Tye Simmonds (KTM) has won the sixth round of the 2009 Australian Motocross Championship in the Pro Lites class and has stepped up into second place in the Championship points chase ahead of Luke George (Kawasaki).

Matt Moss (Suzuki) has retained the red leader plates as the Series takes a short break before heading back to the east coast for the final two rounds.

While the top three Series contenders were a dominant force out west, the round also heralded the return to form of several riders including Kirk Gibbs (Yamaha), Kade Mosig (KTM) and Dean Ferris (Honda).

In the first Pro Lites moto it was Lites veteran, Mitch Hoad (Yamaha), who scored the holeshot and was soon over taken by Gibbs, Simmonds and George.

Meanwhile Series leader Moss crashed in the first turn and was left to battle his way through from the rear of the field.

By the third lap Simmonds had taken the lead ahead of Gibbs and George, and despite struggling to find form all season, looked unstoppable while fighting off several attempts from Gibbs to take the lead.

The top three broke away from the rest of the pack while Moss worked his way up to an impressive eighth place following his nightmare start to the moto.

At the flag Simmonds was barely a second ahead of Gibbs, with George off the pace but still hanging onto third place.

As the second moto got underway, Hoad once again scored the holeshot, soon surrendering the lead to Moss with Simmonds not far behind.

Simmonds caught and passed Moss and began to break out to a lead while George battled it out with Mosig for third place.

It was Simmonds who held onto the lead to take the flag ahead of Moss, while Mosig passed George in the final laps for third place.

In the third moto, Moss was back to his dominant best, scoring the holeshot and breaking out to an strong lead ahead of Brendan Harrison (Honda) and Simmonds.

Moss held onto the lead while Harrison slipped through the field allowing Simmonds and George to pass into second and third with the top three continuing all the way to the flag.

Quotes

Tye Simmonds – “It was a great ride today.

“I’d really like to thank Matt [Moss] for letting me ride with him this week, I think it’s definitely helped me out for sure and the whole team for sending my mechanic over to do some testing, it’s been great.

“Mossy is out there, but I’m going to put my head down and have a week off and get back into training but we’re heading back into Newcastle and the hard stuff so I’m looking forward to that.

“It’s been too long since I had a week off and I’m sick of riding at the moment so to have a week off and get ready for the Hattah Desert Race will be good, something different and I think it will refresh the batteries before Lakes for sure.”

Matt Moss – “I watched George win the Championship last year and I think he only won two of the rounds and it opened my eyes to what I’ve got to do and I think I’m doing that quite well this year.

“I’ve only got two rounds to go with a 20 point lead so I think it’s going well.

“I’m going to America on Tuesday to hang out with my brother, and catch up with some riding as I don’t have a training partner when I go home.

“It’s going to be good to go over there, get on some good tracks have some fun and get to lakes and hopefully be on top of the box.

Luke George – “This weekend didn’t exactly go to plan.

“I really wanted to get some serious points but third isn’t too bad, and I’m only two points behind Tye so I’ve just got to work hard in the next few weeks before heading into Lakes.

“Lakes is my home track so I’m really looking forward to it and hopefully can get back into the points chase with these two guys.”

Luke Styke (Yamaha) has won the sixth round of the 2009 Australian Motocross Championship in the Under 19s at Wanneroo in Western Australia.

The sand took many casualties as either bodies or bikes gave up in the tough conditions.

As the Under 19s got stuck into the first moto is was local rider Josh Adams (Honda) who scored the holeshot and was soon off to an early lead ahead of Dylan Peterson (Honda) and Luke Arbon (Kawasaki), with Series leader Styke back in fifth.

Adams couldn’t hold onto the lead, surrendering it to Peterson, however, he hung onto second place ahead of Arbon at the chequered flag with Styke making it up to fourth place.

In the second moto it was local rider Jake Zelich (Yamaha) who scored the holeshot, however he was soon overtaken by Styke.

Midway through the race Josh Cachia (Yamaha) passed Zelich for second place and proceeded to chase down Styke.

At the flag Cachia came within .3 of a second, however was forced to settle for second place behind Styke with Zelich rounding out the top three.

The third moto got off to a dramatic start with the race red flagged after only one and a half laps after a rider required urgent medical attention.

The race was restarted and Styke was out in front once again, time time followed by Adams and Zelich.

It looked as if they were going to carry onto the finish line in the same order until Zelich stalled his bike in the very last corner, and unable to get it started again slipped back into a heartbreaking 17th place while Peterson stepped up into third.

Quotes

Luke Styke – “I’m really pumped to keep the red plate again and to take the round win.

“It was tough out on that track and even though I train on sand it’s nothing like what’s out here.

“I’m really looking forward to Coolum and hopefully I can hang onto the red plates and points lead and bring this thing home.”

Josh Adams – “I’m stoked; I wasn’t expecting to do this well at all.

“I was pretty confident riding on the track because I know it really well and but I’m surprised to be on the podium.

“It’d be great to get some support so I can head over to Coolum for the final round and see what I can do there.”

Ross Beaton – “I struggled with the track a lot like everybody else, but it’s great to walk away with some points.

“I’m feeling pretty good with myself after a tough weekend but am definitely 100 per cent spent and I’ll be glad to get home, it was punishing out there.

“Coolum is going to be good because all of us guys have are the same speed as we’ve all ridden there since juniors, so hopefully we can go one, two three in the Championship.”
