He’s tackled some monster waves over the years but today former professional surfer Koby Abberton, and his brother Sunny, took a wild ride of a different kind… on the back of a 180-horsepower superbike around Sydney’s Eastern Creek circuit.

Ahead of this weekend’s fourth round of the Woodstock Bourbon Australian Superbike Championship at Eastern Creek Raceway, Koby bravely took a few fast laps on the back of former Australian superbike champion Shawn Giles’ Suzuki GSXR 1000.

“That was amazing… I think… I was too scared to notice most of what was going on!” said Koby Abberton after his hot laps with Giles.

“I’ve done a few wild things in my life but that was crazy! It’s given me a new perspective on motorbike racing. Until I came here I didn’t appreciate how fast they actually go… it was unreal.”

Older brother Sunny also suited up and rode with Kawasaki Racing’s Kevin Curtain, hitting speeds of almost 200 km/h down the 800-metre long front straight.

“I swear I could almost smell the grass, we got that close to the ground into the corners,” smiled Sunny as he hopped off the back of Kevin’s Kawasaki.

“I couldn’t believe how fast we were going, it was like being in a really wild video game.”

“I have had some awesome experiences in my life, but this superbike ride is definitely up there as one of the biggest adrenalin rushes of all time!”

The superbikes completed three practice sessions today, ahead of tomorrow’s qualifying and Superpole.

Shawn Giles (Team Joe Rocket Suzuki) and defending champion Glenn Allerton (Motologic Racing) topped the timesheets, closely followed by Yamaha Racing’s Jamie and Daniel Stauffer.

The two 13-lap Superbike races will be held on Sunday August 9.

Eastern Creek is round four of seven in the 2009 Woodstock Bourbon Australian Superbike Championship.

Tickets are available at the gate.
