Current American AMA Motocross Champion Chad Reed is reportedly prepared to turn his back on a lucrative career in Motocross and Supercross in order to chase his aspirations as a driver in the V8 Supercars Championship Series.

The Daily Telegraph is today reporting that Reed will return to Australia once his new contract with Kawasaki expires in two years time, hopeful of landing a seat in the Fujitsu Series with an eye of stepping into the main game soon after.

“I have tested with TeamVodafone and it is certainly an ambition of mine to drive again,” Reed told the Telegraph. “I have given a lot of thought to coming back and it could be something I do in the next couple of years. I would have to do it properly, which would mean coming through the development series.”

Reed is the third highest sports earner in the nation behind Greg Norman and Harry Kewell, worth an estimated $25-million according to the report, although he realises that a career on four-wheels would greatly extend his motorsport career.

“I have made my money. The challenge of something new is more important,” he revealed.

Current V8 Supercars Champion Jamie Whincup, who is set to wrap up his second successive series for TeamVodafone at this weekend’s Telstra Sydney 500, believes Reed is capable of making the transition.

“He has the talent to do it. Chad is a racer. Give him enough time in any vehicle and he will be a success. At the end of the day you learn how to control the throttle, the break and learn about grip and rubber,” Whincup said. “It is the same for a bike or car. Once you have that skill all you need is time. The best will be the best. Chad was pretty impressive when he tested with us. He didn’t set lap records but he he did a good job.”

Reed is set to wrap up the 2009 Monster Energy Super X, Australasian Supercross Championship Series, at the final round in Brisbane this weekend, before jetting off to the U.S for next year’s AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship Series.
