Catalunya has sweet memories for Stoner ahead of Sunday

Aussie great returns to scene of first ever grand prix test this weekend.

Casey Stoner will contest his final GP at Catalunya this weekend.

Catalunya holds a special place in the memory bank for Australia’s Casey Stoner ahead of this weekend’s fifth round of the MotoGP World Championship.

Stoner made his GP testing debut at the famous Spanish circuit over 10 years ago and looks forward to his final race there come Sunday.

“Catalunya is one of my favourite races and it was the first major grand prix circuit I tested on,” Stoner said. “Ever since that moment I fell in love with the track, the big fast sweeping corners, there’s a lot of control in the middle of the turn trying to get grip for the exit.

“We know the Honda works well here and we had a good race here last year, I just hope this weekend will be dry – that would be great.

Stoner also looks forward to Monday’s post-race test at the circuit, one which he says is important for development.

“After the race we have a test on Monday. I really hope the weather is good for us as it’s an important test going forward for the remainder of the season.”

Two young Australians will be striving to follow in the footsteps of Stoner during his GP career, with Arthur Sissis and Jack Miller on the grid in Moto3 once again.

Australia will also have Anthony West on the grid in Moto2 for the QMMF squad.
