International Entertainment Group managing director Yarrive Konsky has confirmed to CycleOnline.com.au that the spectator numbers were down by 30 percent at Queensland Raceway in 2012.

In a weekend that was plagued by consistent rain in the region until Sunday afternoon, a lacklustre crowd attendance was the end result despite ongoing world class racing.

Despite having Nine Brisbane conduct the state’s weather on Friday evening direct from the circuit and also having a feature air around the country, Australian Superbikes struggled to gain traction in the Sunshine State.

“It’s the first time that we’ve had a rain event like this weekend and it’s disappointing, because we’ve always had a strong crowd here,” Konsky told CycleOnline.

“It was down about 30 percent through the gate and 30 percent is a big hit, but it was still a reasonable crowd. Getting on Nine’s nationwide news on Friday was priceless exposure for our sport. It sets a precedent for what we are trying to achieve, moving forward.”

Konsky believes that hosting the series’ final round at the ‘Paperclip’ in September may have played a part in the low attendance rate, but remains focused on expanding the series during the final two rounds.

“We’ve got an event here in September, which I think also may have played a factor in why the crowd was down a little,” he continued. “Hopefully we can change a few things for the September event, offer people some different forms of entertainment.

“The final round is actually going to be quite exciting with what we’ll bring to the weekend here in Ipswich, so it’s onwards and upwards. Now we’ll focus on Phillip Island.”

ASBK will continue at Phillip Island in Victoria on 17-19 August, marking the penultimate round of 2012.
