Biaggi doubles up on Misano World Superbike weekend

Parkes and Metcher top Australians in Italian round of World Supersport.

Broc Parkes was top-performing Australian at Misano in World Supersport on Sunday.

Italian Max Biaggi won both races during the Misano round of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship in Italy on Sunday.

Aprilia’s Biaggi won race one ahead of Ducati Althea’s world champion Carlos Checa and his rookie teammate Davide Giugliano.

Biaggi won race two by 5.355 seconds, this time ahead of Honda’s Jonathan Rea and BMW’s Leon Haslam.

Checa crashed out of the second race, as did Giugliano following his strong showing in race one.

“It was an unbelievable weekend,” Biaggi said. “It was such a long time since my first win in Australia in February. Now we are back in first position and it’s great.

“I won these races that make me happy, one in the last two laps and the other when you take the lead and go. I can’t ask for more, thanks to all the boys who always try to help me win.”

Biaggi now has a comfortable 38.5-point lead in the series ahead of Rea, with Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes third after claiming a fourth and a seventh in San Marino.

Former multiple-time Supersport World Champion Kenan Sofuoglu won the Misano round of the 2012 title chase for Kawasaki DeltaFin Lorenzini, heading home Jules Cluzel following a tight race for victory.

Alex Baldolini was third to complete the podium, while Australia’s Broc Parkes was a frustrating fifth. Countryman Jed Metcher rode to a career-best seventh in his rookie season.

Former Australian Superbike Champion Bryan Staring was a fighting seventh in the Superstock 1000 race at Misano on Sunday, battling amongst the top five aboard his Pedercini Kawasaki.
