Taree’s Damian Cudlin will make a surprise return to the Moto2 World Championship this weekend, joining the Desguaces La Torre SAG Team in a two-race deal.

Cudlin will ride a Bimota HB4, replacing Angel Rodríguez, who split with the team following Silverstone.

“This is a great opportunity that I can have a few times and I will try to get the best of it,” Cudlin said. “I competed between the best of the world in the past and I performed very well and now I think that I can do it nice again.

“Assen is a mythical circuit which I could ride on during the Dutch championship in 2010 and I have good memories from the Cathedral because I won there in Supersport.

“I hope to make a good race in this occasion, I am eager to get on a Moto2 again.”

It’s expected that, based on performance, Cudlin could complete the remainder of the season with the SAG team. He was initially poised to race the whole year for QMMF, however countryman Anthony West claimed the seat at the 11th hour.

Cudlin’s best Moto2 finish came on debut at the German Grand Prix in 2010, finishing a spectacular seventh.

More recently, he was a guest of the Pramac and Aspar Ducati teams last year in select grands prix, including the Australian round at Phillip Island.

Earlier this month, Cudlin raced to his first ever World Endurance Championship race win at the 8 Hours of Doha in Qatar.
