Allerton sweeps Winton FX-Superbike weekend for BMW

Yamaha Racing Team wraps up Formula Oz title with Cru Halliday.

Glenn Allerton won the FX-Superbike and Formula Oz round at Winton.

Two-time Australian Superbike Champion Glenn Allerton proved the dominant force at Winton’s penultimate round of the Australian FX-Superbike Championship over the weekend, 6-7 October.

Saturday’s FX National round was more ideal for jetski racing rather than motorcycle racing as the rain belted down, and Sunday’s penultimate YMF Loan Australian Superbike Championship was held under warm and blissful conditions at the 3.0km twelve turn circuit.

With Kevin Curtain sidelined with a broken sternum due to his get off that he had during qualifying in the FX600 on Saturday, it’s made the FX-Superbike championship title hunt a whole tighter heading into the final round at Sydney Motorsport Park in five weeks time.

Rick Olson (Yamaha Racing With IPONE) narrowed the margin from 68 points to slender six points by finishing third overall at Winton with a 3-2-3 results with 62 points in the bag.

Just like on Saturday, Allerton (Herpburn Motorsports/BMW/motorridedays.com) made the day his own by sticking his bike on pole with a new lap record, 1:24.522 and claiming three race wins to win the overall round.

Then to rub a bit more salt into the wounds in race one Allerton broke Olson’s previous lap record with a time of 1:24.219. In total, between his FX-Superbike and Formula Oz duties, Allerton scored 10 race wins for the weekend.

“I’m happy, there was a lot of work obviously, the races yesterday were just difficult conditions just to stay on a bike,” he said. “But today I felt like I got pushed in every race it wasn’t like it was a cake walk, the other guys were riding really well.

“Daniel [Stauffer] and Cru [Halliday in Formula Oz], Chris Seaton has not been on a bike for a long time and he rode really well, so it’s a good thing for the sport that these guys are still out there and are still fast.

“Overall I’m really happy with the Herpburn Motorsport BMW team they did a really good job for me this weekend, we have done some updates with the clutch, the bike really gets well off the line well now.”

Second to Allerton was Queenslander Chris Seaton racing the Aluma-Lite Ducati 1198S, who put in a great days worth of work with a solid 2-3-2 placings.

“Today was great, I expected to be battling for top five, but to get on the podium was great,” he said. “The team did a great job with the bike. It’s not often you get to jump on a bike and be that close. It took me a bit to get back up to speed, I have not been here since 2007.

“But I was really enjoying the racing, especially that last race, even though my body was a bit sore. A big credit must go out to all the officials there were a few delays but they got the day done and dusted in the end.”

Rick Olson got himself onto the last step of the podium, but wasn’t overly satisfied with his result for the round.

“We got some good points, definitely not where I wanted to be,” Olson commented. “It would have been nice to have been up there battling for the win, but the main thing is we got some good points for the last round, so will see how we go there.”

Sean Condon (BikeBiz IPONE Racing/Swann Insurance) had a day to remember in FX600, as he proved too good for the rest of the field on his Yamaha YZF-R6 by taking pole position and a 1-1-2 finish to add 72 points to his title hopes for 2012.

Condon now finds himself leading the title charge by a small margin of just two points over Curtain. Just like in the FX-Superbike class, lap records were also broken in this class, with Condon beating Curtain’s qualifying and race lap record in race one.

Condon’s race one lap record was a 1:25.221 set on his sixth lap as he beat Michael Blair (YRD/Finson Motorsports) by 4.008 seconds with Lockart. Mike Jones looked like he was going to give Condon a run for his money in race one as he hit the lead with three laps to run, until he lost the front end at turn nine leaving Condon to cruise home to victory.

The highlight FX-600 race was without a doubt the third and final race where Condon and Jones went toe to toe with each other. In the end it was Jones who got the upper hand on Condon with Blair finishing in third, but second overall on 62 points and said

“The weekend has been unreal, two firsts and a second, [so I] can’t complain,” championship leader and round winner Condon said. “Two points ahead of Kev, unfortunately he couldn’t race today, which did disappoint me.

“I would have liked to have gone out there and beat him fair and square, but that’s racing. Thanks to my sponsors, IPONE and Swann Insurance.”

Third overall went to Lockart on 56 points (3-4-4), Adrian Di Giandomenico in fourth on 49 and Jones in fifth on 47.

Cru Halliday clinched the Formula Oz title with a round to spare on Sunday.

In the Formula Oz class, once again it was Allerton who ruled the day with pole position with a time of 1:23.934 and three dazzling victories which caps off a 100 percent strike rate for the whole weekend.

But the year and championship belongs to Cru Halliday. By finishing second in race one that was enough for the 24-year-old to clinch the title and put it beyond reach with a round remaining.

“It’s a good feeling to win the championship, won it in the first race with two racers to spare and a round to go, so I can now head out in the final racers and play with the big boys and push it to 100 percent,” he said.

“I was riding a bit cautious there. I didn’t want to do a stupid mistake and fall off and hurt myself or cost the championship for Yamaha.”

Third went to fellow Herpburn/BMW rider Daniel Stauffer just two points behind Halliday on 62 with the first Victorian rider Chris Trounson (VIP Petfood Racing/Maxima Racing Oil) Honda CBR 1000RR picking up fourth with 54 followed by Nick Waters (GAS Honda Racing) in fifth on 46.

In the other overall classes, victory went to Phil Lovett (Lovetts Earthmoving/Central Coast Harley Davidson) in the Pro Twins and Peter Ward in the Nakedbikes.

Richard Wilkinson took a 2-1-2 result and overall win in the FX 400 which sees him increase his championship lead. Justin Di Giandomenico winner in the 250M while Peter Galvin won the 125 GP Pro class.

In the FX-450 GP class Grant Hay took a clean sweep with three wins for the day, with Mills in second and Powell in third. AMCN’s Rennie Scaysbrook was fourth with Redding in fifth.

The sixth and final round of the championship will be held at the Sydney Motorsport Park on 9-10 of November.
