Cycle Central: 9

Take an all-access look at your sport every Wednesday on CycleOnline.

Another week is in the books here at CycleOnline.com.au and as some of the closer observers may have noticed, we’re beginning to gain some momentum in terms of consistency and updates on the site once and for all.

It was always the ultimate aim to gather traction around the time of Phillip Island’s ASBK opener around a week ago and, so far, so good.

We’re really just scratching on the surface though when it comes to our planned coverage this season and we have a number of exciting new developments taking place behind the scenes in coming weeks to ensure a successful season (and future) ahead.

For now though, we’ve seen both major national championships open up in the past two weeks, with the FX-Superbike series starting last Sunday at Sydney Motorsport Park.

We’ve had various news stories updating the event this week, but the interesting thing so far is the fact that Kawasaki privateer Matt Walters leads both the ASBK Prostock and FX-Superbikes series after a round each.

Walters came across some stiff competition in the Yamaha Racing teams in Sydney last weekend, but was ultimately able to take victory from defending champion Kevin Curtain and teammate Rick Olson. Returnee Broc Parkes was fourth after having his first ride on the factory Yamaha on Friday.

Cru Halliday is the only one of the Yamaha riders not competing in FX-Superbike, focusing on FX600 despite his unrivalled success on the R1 in Prostock and Formula Oz over the past few seasons.

Maybe next year we will see Yamaha reward him with an FX-Superbike seat to take on Curtain and co. head-to-head. And yes, he won the FX600 overall pretty convincingly, but will come under pressure from Olson throughout the season if the final race serves as any indication.

The FX organisers introduced live streaming online over the weekend in a very slick production, enabling fans from around the country and world to tune in if they’re unable to make the events. It was free and good quality, so well done to the promoters on the introduction of that technology.

Overseas we’re seeing things beginning to heat up for our Aussie internationals, as both Josh Brookes and Jason O’Halloran have been testing in the UK, while IDM regulars Damian Cudlin, Gareth Jones and Jed Metcher have been busy testing in Spain.

As always our goal is to cover these guys the best that we can with the contacts we have, plus press released by the riders and teams themselves is always improving from year to year. Regardless, we have talent all around the globe!

Josh Waters has taken delivery of his via to compete in the UK this season with Milwaukee Yamaha, so he’ll depart tomorrow for London to commence testing this month.

He and Broc Parkes will also test for the Monster Energy Yamaha Austria Racing Team this month, so it’s certainly a busy one for the Australians in Europe.

Two Australians are entered for next week’s opening round of the American Superbike Championship at Daytona, as David Anthony returns for another season after a busy year to date fielding a supercross team in the US as well, plus Trent Gibson will be back again on his own Suzuki. Gibson has also been busy of late, racing at both the ASBK and FX openers here in Australia.

That’s it for this week here in the Cycle Central, thanks for stopping by! Remember, check out our social networking pages by searching CycleOnline on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
