Dunlop looks set to counter-attack in the race for ASBK tyre supremacy, with plans to introduce a new Superbike tyre prior to the next round of the championship at Queensland Raceway.

The Pirelli-shod BMW of Glenn Allerton won both races in Tasmania earlier this month, with the factory Suzuki and Honda efforts, both on Dunlop rubber, filling positions two through four for the weekend.

Dunlop motorcycle and motorsport manager Ken Wieden confirmed to CycleOnline.com.au that the brand hoped to test the new tyre in early June in time for round two.

“We’re working towards getting the new Superbike tyre that we were waiting on towards the end of last year, it is still going through the development stages,” explained Wieden.

“We should have it very soon and we’ll have the option of a couple of compounds to test, after which we’ll make the decision on which to use.”

Wieden said the tyres would be trialled by Honda, Suzuki – or both – at the June test, along with another probable test at a local Victorian circuit.

He was confident that the tyres would be “more than competitive”.

“There are gains to be made with the tyre, absolutely. I’m sure they’ll be more than suitable for what we require of them,” he added.

An update to Motorcycling Australia’s tyre homologation rules indicate the timing for homologation of any new tyre would depend on the availability of all sizes and compounds in stock, with the aim being to make them available for sale only when Dunlop has enough to fulfil all competitors’ requirements at the same time.
