Yamaha Racing with Yamalube’s Broc Parkes took two race wins from three starts to secure his first round victory in the 2013 Australian FX-Superbike Championship contested at Wakefield Park on the weekend.

Parkes, who just a fortnight ago was playing a starring role in Yamaha Australia’s Bol D’or Magny-Cours podium, showed he is up to speed on the R1 in FX specs, also taking a third place to round out the event with 70 points.

“I was really happy to get the overall win this weekend, I had a few dramas early on with the bike but managed to overcome that and open the Sunday with a win,” said Parkes.

“There was a small problem with the clutch which felt like it was free-spinning out of the corners, but I was able to get through it and back up with a good result in the second race.

“We ended up changing bikes for the last race, I hadn’t ridden that bike all year except for one at Eastern Creek, but it felt good and I was able to get the win.

“My championship is coming on fairly strong. At Winton we got one win, and we took two at Wakefield so it’s good to be constantly improving.

“The track was definitely different to what I’ve been racing in the past, I think I last raced at Wakefield on 80s and then 125s, so it has been a while!”

He headed home Rick Olson, of the sister Yamaha Racing with Ipone team, who scored three consistent second place finishes, with Kevin Curtain rounding out the overall podium.

Chris Trounson rode to fourth overall, followed by Corey Snowsill, Paul Byrne, Dustin Goldsmith, Matt Walters, Lachie Thomas and Brad Wootton, who rounded out the top ten.

Second place in the FX-Superbike field marked a solid day for Olson who also secured the FX-600 round victory with a trio of race wins.

“It was a weird weekend with a lot of guys with a few riders crashing while I wasn’t able to get a decent start all day,” said Olson. “Fortunately, I was able to rebound well and I managed a pretty good weekend.

“I will take the 1-2 finish for the day and hold down 1-3 in the championships so far, so things are going alright,” Olson said.

For teammate Curtain it was an up and down weekend. He suffered two unusual crashes – one in Friday practice and the other during Sunday’s races – which disrupted his charge but didn’t cost him the points lead in either of the FX-Superbike or Formula Oz classes.

“I’m feeling pretty second hand at the moment as I had two big offs, one of Friday and another today (Sunday),” said Curtain. “I don’t seem to crash often but when I do it is always pretty big.

“At least the two positives are that I kept the points lead in both classes and there is a bit of a break in the calendar until the next round and gives me some time to heal up before hitting the track again.”

Cru Halliday took three second-place finishes for second overall in the FX-600 class, with Michael Blair rounding out the top three.

Malaysian Mohd Ramdan was fourth, ahead of Justin di Giandomenico in fifth. Nicky Diles, Aiden Wagner, Cambridge Olivier, Jordan Carlsson and Mitch Paynter filled positions six through ten at the close of competition.

There was plenty of attention focused on the Formula Oz field with the entry of Australian Superbike Championship points leader Glenn Allerton.

Allerton and the BMW HP4 have been incredibly strong in the ASBK class and were again in their element at Wakefield Park, with Allerton taking three race wins from as many starts.

Second for the round was Kevin Curtain, and third place went to former ASBK runner-up Russell Holland. Michael McMillan and Michael Lockhart rounded out the Formula Oz top five.
