A bemused Glenn Allerton has responded to Robbie Bugden’s claims that the Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) Symmons Plains result – two race wins from two starts – was partly due to luck.

Team Suzuki’s Bugden took an early lead in the opening race before a red flag incident saw proceedings halted. The subsequent restart allowed Next Gen Motorsport BMW’s Allerton to take the lead which he held until the wave of the chequered flag.

Allerton said Bugden appeared to have his hands full trying to pass his own teammate and felt the Suzuki rider may have just been feeling the pressure.

“I’d say if Robbie thought things were going to go his way he’d have to beat his teammate first,” said Allerton. “If he was going to win he would have to get around [Wayne] Maxwell before he beat me, and he didn’t manage to do that.

“I can see it from his point of view somewhat – he’s still got to say he got a good start. When the red flag came it out kind of screwed me up, and if it was the other way round I’d be thinking of all the positive sides to it too.

“But there was only going to be one result that weekend and that’s the way it turned out.”

Allerton said Bugden would have the chance to respond at his home round in Queensland and looked forward to the challenge.

“I think the pressure’s all on him,” continued Allerton. “He’s back on the factory team again, and you’d have to say Suzuki’s got the biggest team in the paddock, the most experience, the best tuners and so on.

“It’s his home track too. I’m just going there to do the best I can and realistically it’s his time to have a result.”

Allerton takes an 11-point lead over Maxwell to Queensland Raceway for the 14-16 June event, with Bugden a further four points in arrears.
