ASBK stars set for 128km race in South-East Queensland's Scenic Rim.
Australian Superbike Championship frontrunners Ben Henry and Wayne Maxwell will join a lineup of motorcycle and cycle stars in this weekend’s Allenview Turf Troy Bayliss Invitational on the Scenic Rim in South-East Queensland.
Keen cyclists, Henry and Maxwell have been putting in the hours to prepare for the 128 kilometre race which is capped off by a 25 kilometre climb into the rainforest at O’Reillys.
Henry, owner of the Cube Racing Suzuki team, rides regularly with Bayliss as a primary form of training and said he expected the A-grade event to offer a serious challenge.
“I cycle with Troy quite a lot, we probably cycle together a few times a week when he’s home, so it’s really good that he’s been able to put this event together,” said Henry.
“The course will be tough, the climb is around 25 kilometres and only has a tiny flat spot so it will be about one and a half hours of climbing.”
“I expect between myself, Wayne and [off-road racer] Chris Hollis, we’ll all be trying to beat each other up in a race to get to the top.”
Though the climb will be tough, Henry will be aptly prepared. The Gold Coast-based racer covers between 300 and 600 kilometres a week in his own regular training rides.
Former World Superbike and MotoGP star Chris Vermeulen is also entered, and Henry has a hint that 2010 Australian Supersport Champion Troy Herfoss could also be taking part.
“I had heard a rumour that Troy Herfoss could be coming up for it,” said Henry. “If that’s the case then we’re all in trouble. The guy is a freak on anything with two wheels, he will just blow us out of the water.”
Following the event the riders will turn their attention to a scheduled test at Queensland Raceway next week ahead of round three on 14-16 June.
