Team Suzuki’s Wayne Maxwell stood tall at the top of the time sheets following today’s official Australian Superbike Championship test at Sydney Motorsport Park.

The experienced 30-year-old posted an unofficial 1m30.2 late in the afternoon session of the test, eclipsing the official Superbike race lap record of 1m30.998 set by Josh Waters in 2009.

It was a positive test for Maxwell after finishing third at Queensland Raceway last weekend, setting himself up strongly ahead of Sydney Motorsport Park’s ASBK return on 1-4 August.

“The GSX-R1000 is working awesome at Eastern Creek,” Maxwell told CycleOnline.com.au this afternoon.

“The scary thing is that we’ve still got some improvements to make, but we’re already fast. It just goes to show how adaptable the Suzuki is to different style circuits and it’s given me a lot of confidence.

“Warren [Monson] and Phil [Tainton] have helped me out a treat and the bike’s coming along great – we couldn’t be happier to finish the test on this note.”

Second quickest today was current series leader Glenn Allerton (Next Gen Motorsports BMW) with a 1m30.9, while Team Honda Racing duo Josh Hook and Jamie Stauffer recorded identical times at 1m31.0.

Allerton’s Next Gen teammate Linden Magee was an early casualty at the test, transported to hospital with a suspected wrist injury according to the team. Before his incident, Magee posted a 1m33.0.

Beau Beaton (Racer’s Edge Performance Suzuki) was sixth quickest with a personal best of 1m33.4 on his GSX-R1000, while Team InsureMyRide Racing Honda rookie Glenn Scott posted a 1m34.0.

Queensland Raceway round winner Robbie Bugden was absent from the test, his number six GSX-R1000 sat idle in the Team Suzuki garage throughout the test. Stay tuned for more on that developing story.

Other notable absentees included Suzuki privateers Chas Hern (CM Racing Team Suzuki) and Ben Henry (Cube Racing Suzuki).

The expected inclusion of seven-time American Superbike Champion Mat Mladin alongside Allerton and the Next Gen team didn’t materialise today, now expected to take place at a latter date during the season.

Top Prostock time recorded was Kawasaki rider Sean Condon with a 1m33.1, with Phil Lovett next best at 1m33.8. Next Gen Motorsports BMW’s Ben Nicolson lapped at 1m34.3.

In Supersport it was Queensland Raceway pole-setter Chris Quinn who set the pace with a 1m34.6 on his privateer Yamaha YZF-R6, leading Daniel Falzon’s 1m35.0 set aboard his spare bike during the test.

Queensland Raceway winner Michael Blair (Yamaha) and Ryan Taylor (Yamaha) both recorded times in the 1m36.0 bracket.

All times listed were attained by CycleOnline.com.au from available teams and riders at the test’s conclusion.
